Hello everybody,

I run Ubuntu linux on an Acer Aspire which equipped with a Nvidia fx Go5200.

I correctly installed Nvidia driver packages and both XGL xserver modules and Compiz packages using Synaptic.

I modified xorg.conf and gdm.conf-custom following Ubuntu XGL/compiz howto.

Upon reboot, I get a triple flash and a black screen followed by the following X server error message:

NVIDIA(0): Failure reading maximum pixel clock value for display device
NVIDIA(0): TV-0

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has one level, but <RALT> has 2 simbols
Ignoring extra simbols

FreeFontPath: FPE "usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Already tried googling with no result at all.

If I restore my original gdm.conf-custom, X server starts correctly, without XGL.
It seems those infamous errors are still there, but are not fatal to default X.

Here are my configuration files and X error log, I'd be glad if someone would be so kind to give them a look.

>>>here is gdm.conf-custom

# GDM Configuration Customization file.
#
# This file is the appropriate place for specifying your customizations to the
# GDM configuration. If you run gdmsetup, it will automatically edit this
# file for you and will cause the daemon and any running GDM GUI programs to
# automatically update with the new configuration. Not all configuration
# options are supported by gdmsetup, so to modify some values it may be
# necessary to modify this file directly by hand.
#
# To hand-edit this file, simply add or modify the key=value combination in
# the appropriate section in the template below. Refer to the comments in the
# gdm.conf file for information about each option. Also refer to the reference
# documentation.
#
# If you hand edit a GDM configuration file, you should run the following
# command to get the GDM daemon to notice the change. Any running GDM GUI
# programs will also be notified to update with the new configuration.
#
# gdmflexiserver --command="UPDATE_CONFIG <configuration key>"
#
# For example, the "Enable" key in the "[debug]" section would be specified by
# "debug/Enable".
#
# You can also run gdm-restart or gdm-safe-restart to cause GDM to restart and
# re-read the new configuration settings. You can also restart GDM by sending
# a HUP or USR1 signal to the daemon. HUP behaves like gdm-restart and causes
# any user session started by GDM to exit immediately while USR1 behaves like
# gdm-safe-restart and will wait until all users log out before restarting GDM.
#
# For full reference documentation see the gnome help browser under
# GNOME|System category. You can also find the docs in HTML form on
# http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/

The problem is related to the line

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failure reading maximum pixel clock value for display device

I have tried a quick google and noting came up. The only thing I can suggest you try is to remove these from the monitor section.

Option "DPMS"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
Option "NvAGP" "1"

Also since you are using nVidia, you may want to try using xorg 7.1 + the beta drivers. That way you do not have to run Xgl, compiz will run on an unmodified version of X.

I'll try removing those lines

Option "DPMS"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
Option "NvAGP" "1"

I don't think the second option ("nologo") would solve my problem, as it only disables nvidia splash logo.

Perhaps the problem is related to monitor refresh rate..

I also found some people on koroora forum complaining XGL crashed on their systems with my same warning message:

FreeFontPath: FPE "usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Here is the thread:
http://forums.kororaa.org/viewtopic.php?t=700&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Maybe this is my fatal bug; unfortunately, they had no solution, only reinstalling their systems.

Any idea?
Meanwhile I'll try messing with xorg.conf..

Hi, mike zz ...

If you downloaded the nvidia-driver from nvidia.com and are using Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft), I really agree with mikedee to NOT use Xgl, you can use the nvidia-driver with aiglx/xorg - that can save you a lot of time ... If you have nvidia-glx-driver installed via synaptic, you need to use Xgl.

But I think there are some small errors in your xorg.conf. As mikedee said, remove (or simply uncomment) these lines from your "Monitor"-section and put them into "Device"-section:Option "NoLogo" "1"
Option "NvAGP" "1"

Then try adding these two lines to your "Screen"-section:Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"

You can additionally try adding these two lines to your "Screen"-section (they don't have any effect for me):Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"

Maybe the go-version of the FX5200-card needs some "special treatment" (my G-forceFX420go did), you can ask/look for that on the nvidia-forums if things keep not working.

I also recommend having a look at this tutorial (http://www.compiz.biz/viewtopic.php?t=90), some things may be helpful for you ...

NOTE: Sorry for editing your post a little bit, but it broke the width of the page ...

Hello again everybody, and thank you very much for your suggestions.

Forgot to say I run Ubuntu Dapper 6.06, thus sadly I haven't got xorg 7.1 installed and can't try aiglx extensions.
I installed nvidia modules using synaptic as I broke my first ubuntu installation trying to compile nvidia drivers.
If you know a way or point out a working howto to upgrade xorg server on Dapper and enabling aiglx, please tell me.

Regarding XGL and my problem, I tried uncommenting every line you suggested, and then re-enabling them one by one, with no luck at all.
I also tried putting lines alternatively to both "Screen" and "Device" section, but nothing changed.

I am still stuck with the same error message.

The strangest think is that Kororaa live cd boots in xgl mode and I can appreciate the fine eyecandy of compiz.
Still no way of running Xgl under Ubuntu..sadly.,

Thank you very much however for your help.

You can try to use this howto (http://forum.beryl-project.org/topic-5063-howto-xgl-beryl-kubuntu-dapper-with-nvidia) - it is for beryl, but installing Xgl and the nvidia-drivers is the same thing for both ... maybe it helps.

One question: Do you have any sane reason for keeping Dapper and not upgrading to Edgy? You will have more "fun" with Edgy because it is more up-to-date ... and instead of further messing with your problems for a few hours, you could simply download the Edgy-iso (and backup your home-dir in the mean time) and then do a fresh install. Then you could use the nvidia-drivers with aiglx and wouldn't need Xgl anymore ... of couse I can understand if you don't want to "give up".

I googled for hours and realized that perhaps the real problem which prevents Xgl from running is:

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Googling for "xgl+refcount" returns a plethora of pages relating to the same problem: XGL can't start if there's that annoying warning.
It can happen with virtually any distro and graphic adapters.

Unfortunately nobody seems to have a workaround.
It could be a xorg bug.

Yes, I am thinking about switching to Edgy, but I would loose all my configuration-and-installation work , which would take a few days of effort.

I think I will wait for a while. Perhaps in the next Ubuntu release, to keep up with Vista, xorg will be aiglx-compiz ready..who knows?

Meanwhile, I will continue running my old-fashioned 2D desktop, hoping to find a temporary solution to run Xgl..
Bye and many thanks, again !

Try to enter "locate freefont" in a terminal and check where the freefont-files are located. If they are not in "/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc", then correct the path in your xorg.conf to the path where the files really are (on Edgy it is "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont") - maybe it helps.

No, most (if not all) of your personal configuration is saved within your home-folder (if you don't use web-servers) - backing up your home-dir saves all your configuration. Next time you reinstall try to place your /home-path on its own partition, then you can simply wipe out everything else while keeping your personal data untouched ...

Don't give up ...

It was an unsolvable xorg font bug which prevented Xgl from starting

I took the chance of reformatting my drive and installing the latest Ubuntu release (6.10) which comes with xorg 7.1 and aiglx.

After downloading latest nvidia driver directly from Nvidia site and installing them, I simply enabled Aiglx extension in xorg.conf.

Then I was able to successfully install both compiz-freedesktop and beryl.

They are both nice, the first is simple and stable, the second one has many features but perhaps lacks in ease of use.
I'll keep both of them.

Bye and thanks again!

Welcome to the cube club :)

You shouldnt need to enable the aiglx in xorg with nvidia drivers > 9000 the functionality of aiglx is not needed with them. You could try commenting those parts and see if it still works. Do not worry too much as long as it works though ;)

If there are any features that beryl has but that are not in compiz which you think are useful, please mention on these forums and hopefully someone can include them or we can send them on to David to look at.

Oh, and make sure you install the compiz-extra package which has most of the beryl plugins. Also look in the plugin section, I have posted my mouse gestures plugin which might be useful to you.
