Window quads?

Help, please! I am trying to understand the whole idea and architecture behind the decorations and the decoration-plugin. I understand almost everything on the X-/cairo-side, but I have no clue what the window-quads are and what they are used for ... can maybe someone briefly explain what they are used for and why?
