I just saw this mockup by Jimmac, and it would be extra sweet to have.

The experience of logging into a Linux desktop is somewhat flaky and flickery. It's a bit better with KDE, but still doesn't have a polished feel.

There should be minimal flicker and UI elements that do not respond. Windows suffers from this just as we do. I believe enlightenment did a nice curtain effect a long time ago where you would only be show a desktop when it was fully loaded and ready to go.

afaik, that requires changes to gdm, I don't think anything has to be done to compiz (it could use a simple dbus call), but it would awesome

That would truly be amazing. But of course, out of Compiz's control.

Btw, that mockup is great! :D

Put it on the list for the theoretical CDE (Compiz Desktop Environment).

They're stealing my project names before I even think of them! How dare they!

Btw, is it possible to get a login screen like that? Not the cube rotation, of course, but the animations and stuff?

Somehow I got fade effects on gdm, don't remember doing anything maybe I was sleep-typing ;)

Compiz effects are possible, somehow you need to edit gdm's config to run
export environment variables
compiz args fade place resize
and that should provide fading menus, tooltip, etc

CDE existed as desktop environment long before the cream project, too. Heck, probably before many people on these forums were even born:
