I am constantly switching back and forth between desktops (while keeping an eye on the desktop switcher (the applet on the bottom right in default Gnome setups)) . Even when the sliding is configured to happen as fast as possible, it is very annoying.
Personally I also find the non-compiz window switcher nicer than the one with preview windows (I know, it is a lot more boring, and there have been some really skillful people at work, but my suggestions are just to try make suggestions that would improve productivity).

To summarize, you could put it the other way around:
Essentially I would like a default non-compiz enabled desktop, but with some of the compiz features that I like (e.g. the scale, zoom and expo plugins).

In the next version of compiz fusion (and in the latest git code) wall can be configured to switch with a duration of 0 and there is a "staticswitcher" plugin. This plugin looks like the current switcher except that it displays all windows and moves the selection rectangle instead of only showing three at a time.

Also, there is 2 new vp switcher plugins on the plugin dev forum, with different 'basic' effects (I think fade and no effect)

Ah great :) Sorry for the noise, I'm not actively following current developments. Keep it up ;-)
