I have tried just about everything for the last week to get this going, I have tried Nvidia drivers from nvidia, restricted drivers from the ubutnu repository, currently running Nvidia driver install with EnvyNG...I really don't see errors, It just locks up. I was able to run with this command once "compiz --sm-disable --replace ccp", and then started adding things I found in this forum to try and find a better solution.

Any help would be appriciated.

My Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf are attached.

Hi,
I had problems with 5900xt , but I solved with these steps.
First of all , I forgot to attach the power cable of the GC
2. I install the proper restricted drivers , after you came up with the kernel , and restart
3. I used the envy , didn't give anything

I hope it helps

Thanks, but still nothing yet, like I said it works partially. must be a setting wrong somewhere, or just something Im missing, It would really help to have a working xorg.conf & nv-kernel-nkc from a working system with a FX 5950 Ultra...then at least I could rule that out as possible causes.

I have had the freeze ( lock-ups ) for several months.
The problem was due to nvidia driver , as they said themselves ( I've read it )
I don't think there is still problems if you have the last updates.

I put my xorg.conf , try that , I hope it helps.

Thanks for the .conf file, it looks good and have merged so to speak the two. Sometimes it will start, screen flickers and comes back with no borders or I guess the put effect..and then locks the whole computer up. I have also tried running fusion-icon with a little more success but the end result is the same...it just locks up the computer... I will keep searching for the correct answer and configuration.
This is in a P4C800-E asus MB. with a 8X AGP slot.

moreover, i suggest to install "fusion-icon" package and run it instead of cmd line.
fusion-icon is available in hardy repository too

I have already done that, same effect...starts up & then locks up. I have also compiled Some-Guys git repo...nice job...but still the same thing....need setting somewhere, just have not been able to find whats causing the problem yet..because there are no real error msg's just a lockup. Right now Im running the Nvidia driver installed by EnvyNG scripts...but I also tried using the driver from the Nvidia site, and changing nv-reg.h to support X4 AGP speed, that did not help either.

Ahh sorry about that, its your script, great job !

Stuck an old GeForce3 TI 200 64mb in and everythung works great, to bad about the 5950, I will have to keep trying to find a solution, 256mb, or just get a newer card.
