An all new type of theme, with effects that actually look 99.9% real, probably based on the same goods all those nice new games are on. Alot of the effects (eg.smoke patterns) would be totally random, to avoid repetitiveness.
User can change colors, desktop image (although it adapts the desktop texture by default), and other stuff thats possible in todays themes.
This is probably beyond current capabilities, but what better time to start working on it?
This should easily be achievable with all those new gpu's.
H2O
ice like transparency.
Panels/windows/icons freeze into place, depending on user settings. Melt when required.
Eg. panel is set to auto hide, when mouse moves into position, it freezes into place, when your done with it, it melts, all in the time it would normally takes for it to appear/hide.
Certain types of movement cause fluidic disturbances, like a new drive appearing on the desktop. Stargate texture type background, but with normal Ubuntu colors. same option for folder backgrounds.
Deleted/created items melt/freeze into place.
Carbon
wood type background.
Panels/windows/icons burn into place glowing, but slowly cooling down (in the form of coal), and regenerate (like a tree heals itself) when required.
Eg. panel is set to auto hide, when mouse moves into position, it burns into place, when your done with it, it regenerates, all in the time it would normally takes for it to appear/hide.
Deleted items burn, with smoke after effects.
passing the mouse through smoke or flame disturbs it, like passing ones hand through smoke.
Life
All based on the natural cycle of life.
smooth earth type desktop texture.
Panels/windows/icons grow into place in the form of plant (moss, vines?), decompose when required. all in the time it would normally takes.
Sky
sky like desktop
Panels/windows/icons appear like clouds, clear the same way as the weather.
