I looked around and couldn't see this suggested anywhere, so I think it's original.

I really like reflections. I won't justify them by trying to say there functional, because the truth be told, there for pure eye candy. My suggestion is for a reflection of the desktops to be shown when in unfold mode. Here a mock-up of my suggestion:-

Done this in GIMP with my current desktop. I like this effect, i know it's not functional, then possibly it could be in compiz-extras or something?

Cheers Dan

interesting. and just like we have a skybox, this could be a bottom reflective plane, where the cube reflects, which would incidentally give this effect on exploded cube mode. other surface effects, such as reflecting/refracting ripples, to simulate a sort of lake could be available.

one step further: 3d skybox (think of half life 2 3d skyboxes if you ever done some hl2 level editing)

While I cannot promise it 100%, but I'll try to implement this in a free slot during the week of the Ubuntu Developer Summit Sevilla (6.5. - 12.5.) and send the patch to the upstream mailing-list as proposal for inclusion.

Best regards...

I think this shouldn't be limited to cube unfold. Cube rotation should also have this (with a zoom-out of course). That is used much more than unfold, and would look cooler. Like this:
