Its not the most functional of ideas but gosh darn it if it wouldn't be pretty swank to be able to embed audio visualisations (and perhaps other things) into elements of the desktop such as the desktop background (i imagine some time down the road that there will be dancing fedora/ubuntu backgrounds in tune to music)

not sure if this has ocured to anyone before, apologies if this has been discussed before.

i imagine it would be something like embeding the glgears in the desktop cube (or any gl application) and i could see it being extended to letting you embed perhaps any openGL application into a desktop element, imagine running a counter strike or a tremulous server and embeding it spectator mode into your desktop so you could just watch every now and then.....

of course thats one possible path something like this could take....

oh and thanks knudsenjoe for supporting the idea :D i was beginning to think no one would reply.

Many times... You want my take on the matter? Write an extension to libvisual* that sends dbus events to Cube DBus or whatever b0le's calling it these days to generate particles (or a separate plugin, but either way, dbus calls would be a simple way to do it just to get it done, a full audio analyzer could be made later, I still want to see audio in plugins, myself...)

Hi all I suggested something like this a couple of days ago with respect to the 3d screensaver using ProjectM libraries which has ready interfaces for jack, pulse audio and libvisual.

I don't know if anyone has looked at it but really is the best music visualizer for linux, its inspired by milkdrop from winamp.

Hopefully (fingers crossed) the developers of ProjectM and Compiz could put their heads together and see what they come up with ?
