I was searching on wikipedia for the compiz real meaning
I found this two:
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kompis
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/COMPIS (this a förgreningssida, bifurcation)
Does it have any relation with friendship?
ps: it would be a nice add to the wiki... :D

We have never heard the full story, I dont think its a literal translation.
My personal best guess is that in the early days there was no name and all the function names started comp (maybe to stand for composited). Then came a time for a name and compiz sounded nice because its a bit like friendship in Swedish.
None of this should be taken as official. If you want the real story you should mail David, I suspect its something like that though.
I think a Q & A with David would be nice, if people have any questions for him, we can put them all down and he is willing to answer them. I think its best to send them all at once, it would be nice to have a technical + compiz history mix.

well the second link is almost "The word" , for swedish and computers, LOL the very first intel-80186 Ibm-compatible developed in sweden
I don't know swedish... this is from an online translator
COMPIS är väl en ordlek med "Computer" och "Kompis"
COMPIS is welfare a vocabulary with " computer " and " mate "
funny isn't it?

Well, "kompis" is colloquial Swedish meaning "pal" or "friend".
COMPIS är väl en ordlek med "Computer" och "Kompis"
This would correctly translate into "COMPIS is sort of/probably a play on words with 'computer' and 'kompis'." (I do not know the context, so I cannot translate it correcly.)
To be honest, the name "Compiz" is what originally attracted me to the project. "Wha'", I thought, "sounds a whole lot friendlier that Metacity!"

Kompis is another word for the English word 'buddy' here in Norway atleast
I suspect the word means the same in sweden too :)

Compiz comes from "Luminocity". This is something no one ever says, I dont know why; we always mention David Reveman, but we never mention Owen Taylor. Luminocity was an awesome name in my opinion.

I suppose Compiz now comes from Composite, dont know where the "iz" comez from.

well I have prepared my own Q & A, I call it Compiz & Kompis the funny odd questionarie
I am williing to send it to the mailing list, however I think I 'm passed away with oddities..so I write it down here so you can make your own judgements and improve it, correct it, or make it more technical, etc..... for it to represent in a better way the community...
the name compiz suggests some relation with the words: friend, mate, pal, etc.....
-Is it true?
-Does compiz has a literal translation?, or it's just an ordinary declination for the word composite...
-Were your first steps into programming/computers, with a COMPIS machine? (http://pc-museum.com/030-compis/index.htm)
[list:554e102171]if yes....
-Did it ship with a programers book about Pascal?
-Kompis sounds to me as the equivalent to Computer-Mate (an ancient texas instrumet funny-artifact)...
-Would you say that COMPIS -80186 (http://pc-museum.com/030-compis/index.htm) is a friendly PC?
-Does the compiz code, inherits features of Owen's taylor luminocity-wm project?
-How much part of the current compiz code, rellies on Xgl?
-Would we using some of the features; i.e Gegl and other Xorg bleeding-edge technologies, on our desktops?...(as a part, being implemented in the compiz code?)
finally, the KDE developers are on to their own version of a composite-wm (kompmgr), would you suggest Kompis as a good name?[/list:u:554e102171]
