View Full Version : Solved Compiz Causes X Crashes with 169 Nvidia Drivers

I have bugged compiz developers and also nvidia. After upgrading to either 169 or 171 series drivers, if compiz fusion is running as window manager in kde, and you open a konqueror window, and then click the k icon in the top right corner to produce a duplicate window, X crashes. It is repeatable over 3 or 4 machines for me, all running different distros. If kwin is the window manager, you can open all the duplicate windows you want, nothing happens. If you open konqueror as superuser (root), almost for sure by the second window, X will crash. As your regular user it sometimes happens after one window, sometimes after 10 or 15. The 100 series drivers never did this.
Can someone else test this and see if they can repeat this? And post your results.
Thanks

I can't really confirm your test scenario, but I can add to it. I've been experiencing problems with the same drivers and kicker panels. I just tried to load Konq to test your scenario and it just dies (won't load).
Does that sound like it might be related?

What do you mean you tried to load konq, do you mean konqueror? And what exactly do you mean by it dies, does the window not open?

Yes, trying to load Konqueror and the window didn't open. It looked like it was trying to load but the window never came up. I found this article and it fixed the issue with Konqueror but not my others. This might help you as well:

Sorry, I am using a system with a pci video card so the nvagp thing ain't going to change anything. I think I will just stick with the drivers that work for me, the 100 series.

Found the problem, it was emerald, Ive filed a bug, took quite a bit of troubleshooting but no question, definitely emerald.

Well I'm not able to reproduce that bug here using 169.12 on a 7900GS and konqueror 3.5.7. While I have no doubt that emerald has (many) bugs, I will point out that any time an application is able to crash the X server, there is either a bug in the X server or the video card drivers, so I wouldn't be so sure that the source of the problem doesn't actually like with the nvidia drivers .

That may be so but I also saw another bug go away when changing to kde window decorator. When I would open a java page with konqueror or even with firefox, usually X would crash, its not doing it anymore. Reality is that the Crystal window theme is so modifiable that you can almost duplicate an emerald theme and not be bothered by using foreign window decorators.

Hi, to fill some more info into this:

http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4417
I've got both of them + issues.
Don't know when it started appearing, I've got 169.12 drivers anyway.
Fedora Core 8,Gnome, compiz (0.6.2). No fusion, yet.
Question was more if it's really X that's crashing, or if it's compiz -> gnome, cause my X log looks clear (i only see 1 start, and 0 error marks, so either it flushes it when it restarts, or... it never stopped!)
