View Full Version : screen-tied (sticked?) dockbars (not tied to cube nor plane)

back in beryl, there was a feature I really liked: have the dock bars stay always at the same place (e.g gnome classics: top and bottom of screen)

that is, when you rotate the cube, when you zoom it out (once it's implemented), when the desktop slides to the next (plane, wall), whatever else... they don't move by a single pixel. they always stay at top and bottom of the screen, and they don't appear on (e.g) the cube or the wall either.
I really liked that, because it gave some depth to the desktop, and you really felt like they were docked, bound, tied, sticked, to the screen edge (physically).

I would also like to see this feature in Compiz. It looks terrible when using wall or plane and you change desktop and panels fly around only to land in the same place looking identical.

Panels are not on the cube, they are just flating docks on the screen. You rotate cube, but panels stay on the screen.

Check out a video of OSX Leopard spaces - the panels would behave pretty much like that.

Thats cool and all, but when the patches to gnome make it upstream that allow different wallpapers per background then I think they should stick with the current scheme or it will break the metaphor.

even though, I don't think so, and whatever, it was optional before, and it would certainly be optional later on. different people, different expectations :)

Anyone tried to port this feature?

I love this idea, and was about to request it myself before I saw this thread.

This could be just another window flag like "sticky" or "always on top". Or it could just be an option like "Sticky windows do not rotate with the cube".

Anything with this flag (or the sticky flag) would appear to be physically attached to the front surface of the monitor as the desktop cube zooms out behind it and rotates back there. It would be a good place for panels, semi-transparent gadgets, system monitors, pagers, docks, etc.

I'd like to have this for ages, too. In fact the EWMH-specs say that a window manager which implements the "largedesktop"-feature (like compiz through the cube, plane or wall plugins) should have sticky windows "stick to the glass" when switching/scrolling between viewports within that large desktop. It shouldn't be much of a problem to make this behavior optional, maybe using window matching.

So the standards are on our side :) ... but the plugin developers of those plugins have to care for that. I thought wall had such feature? If not, I'd like to know why it wasn't ported.

:)
