View Full Version : tossing windows to next/previous desktop

I think it would be interesting to be able to toss a window to the next desktop with a swift mouse movement (think of bumptop video where the guy quickly tosses items in piles, that kind of movement)

this would put it on the next desktop (at the same relative place, similar to ctrl+alt+shift+right with cube+rotate), but:
1. without dragging the window all the way to its final position
and
2. without switching desktop

this is ideal for:
- quickly sorting lots of windows (hop, hop, this one goes left, this one goes right)
- for windows that have just pop up and you don't want to close or minimize, but are in the way right now (e.g windows that you know will be useful later on, but you want to e.g continue reading something)

Hop, hop, this one goes up/down.... AAAA where's my window?
How to avoid situations like this one?

hmm, solutions:
first, it could be restricted to certain directions (left/right).
second, we would see the window going to, and disappearing past the edge, so that "where" would be obvious
third it could involve some smart movement detection (like mouse gestures), and the toss would not occur:
- if the mouse is decelerating when the button is released (avoids toss when simply moving windows)
- if the mouse is not travelling far enough/fast enough
- if the mouse is not travelling in a constant direction along a "straight" line
fourth, it could need some key presses (like for alt+drag for move/resize)

what about that?

You can do exactly this (in a controlled) way with mousegestures + put

interesting, I'll look into that once Arch has a extra plugins package for compiz 5

Just compile yourself the plugins I am also using arch and there is no harm because the plugins are installed in your home folder so if something goes wrong just delete the folder :p.

I'm also using Arch and I do it this way.
