this thread will tell you how to get compiz on E17
frist do
apt-get install emodule-bling
then edit your Xorg.conf file and add the appropriate setting for you ATI/Nvidia Card, then login to e17 load the module Bling and WA-La you have

Will you have the cube effect and everything? I heard there was a hack on compiz and e17 called ecomorph, a proof-of-concept that allowed you to use compiz rendering on any window manager

remove the windowing part of compiz and turn it into a compositing manager for use with other window managers?
