I don't know if this is the right spot to say it, but I really really like the new go-compiz.org design and the integration with the forums. It looks very nice :D

Many thanks to all the people involved!

There are some things that could use touching up, but it's definitely a great start. :D

i love it :D

(though it is slightly too bright for my tastes....but i still love it :D)

probably be much better if the text was black instead of silver :D

and if the threads with new posts in them were highlighted better :D

and the little square next to the date of the post saying that this post is read, would be lot's better if it blended in with the colour behind it :D

Thanks everybody - I'm glad to hear that you like the new design :) ...

Most people said it is too bright so I guess it's true :D ... I'll fix that the next days, I needed a small break - you can't imagine how difficult this whole stuff became in the end. Coding the template/skin was easy and straight-forward but getting everything up and running was a real PITA. I had no db-access and whenever I needed changes in the db I had to contact Jeff via email or write a PHP-script for modifiying the db ... It is very close to a miracle that we got that thing up and running today. (Thanks, Jeff for your patience :))

The plugin-download section will come soon, too. I am working on a template-based way to do that. We first have to re-organize the wiki a little bit and clean up here and there. It's all still a bit experimental ...

Whew! This turned out to be a much bigger project than we expected. The DNS isn't changed yet (we are re-directing a re-direct right now) but the site was also moved to the compiz.org domain. On top of that we changed the mysql database from a remote host to the local host. So RYX uploaded a new installation to the new site, I backed up the old site, did a mysqldump from the old host, uploaded the database to the local database, spent a bunch of time with config sutff, and then left RYX to move the wiki to the new site and modify it to fit his new tabbed design. Of course it didn't go smooth like that. It took all day, but I think the site was only down a couple times for about two hours total. Many thanks to RYX and amgeex for their design work, and a huge thanks to RYX for all the effort to get the site up. Nice Job!

Jeff

I noticed that the header with the logo is a little bit mmm well it's a gif and it would be better if you change it to a PNG with better quality.

Ooops :) ... That's a relic of the theme I started from, I planned to convert them to pngs (which is no problem because I recreated each single graphic in the template and have all the SVG/XCF files). The cool thing is that these GIFs are almost all smaller than 1Kb in size which results in lower traffic. Of course, the header-images are just placeholders for something more beautiful and subject to change. I'd like to place some "composite bling effects" there but I had nothing at hand (and wanted to avoid using Flash).

@imnotpc: Thank you, too :D ...

Finally! Big thanks on the job for everyone involved in the work (including that mediawiki mess. /me slaps them for that stupid pseudo-skin system).
I'd have liked to see a more Web 2.0-like site though, the new layout is somehow a bit Web 1.5. (I know it was created a long time ago.)

Some improvements:
- Contrast and use of colors overall and in seperation of elements (shift it a bit towards a Web 2.0 style; just compare previous wiki skin with the one you got now and verify if you still can clearly depict elements)
- Move the "Forum" part of the "Forum : <Subforum> : ..." subnavigation upwards to "Search Memberlist FAQ" and either name it "Forum" aswell or maybe "Overview". It feels that each tab's first navigation point is somehow of the root anchor to allow you quickly to return to the "front page" of the specific tab page.
- (Harder) Merge the user authentication logic for wiki and forum so you require just one credential.
- (Far Future) Font usage is a bit inconsistent. Just create an example simple wiki page with all headers and see if it is distracting, not sure if small-caps should be set either.

Again thanks for finally bringing this new fresh look even during all that merge buzz!

One suggestion, how about changing the yellow circles to something like that.

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/3834/70603156me5.png (http://imageshack.us) http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/1655/c2ek3.png (http://imageshack.us)

I'm not even sure what they mean, but i guess they indicate that there are a lot of posts in a thread, right?
Anyway the yellow circles don't really fit into the theme.

@FunkyM: Your suggestions more or less describe my plans for the future. Especially the more contrasted colorset is something that's badly needed. I had close to no content when creating the template so some things were difficult to predict. Merging user-authentication for wiki/forum is basically a good idea but imho would be better done by using a CMS which does all the dirty integration-work.
Due to the problem that phpBB2 doesn't support php within templates I was very limited in what I could do. Once we have switched to phpBB3 we should be able to do much more cool things.

@lowfi: Thanks - a very nice solution. The current image is really ugly and was never intended to go into the final version. I'll correct those things once the dns-entries are updated (so in a few days).

This blue logo is the new and final logo for the Compiz project. And yeah, great work Rico and Jeff, the site looks just great and it has gotten us some nice comments already! Yay! :P

speaking of the icon

compiz keeps it's icon

beryl keeps it's icon

but an icon for both merged together http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5656&p=31332#p31332 :D

Not to be mean, but that's horrifically ugly. :/

Has nothing to do with "The Composite Community" concept.

Has nothing to do with "The Composite Community" concept.

it's a cross between the beryl and compiz icons

so if it has nothing to do with the composite community concept, then the compiz and beryl icons have nothing to do with this concept themselves :D :P

I don't want to be mean, too, but that icon makes me :x ... We have no name for it, we have no goals for it, we have no "it" - but, hey, we already need a "great new" icon, don't we? [*sigh*] ...

:D

People keep it down. You are really acting like children...
"Oh my good someone had the idea to merge our two logos to illustrate the project merge! We are all doomed!"
I can't see why you are all so offended by it. It's only an icon... (and a nice one too btw. even if its very unlikely to be chosen as the real project icon...)
:?
It's just unfair to the creator to say his icon is bad because a few people here dislike the merge.

RYX
April 9th, 2007, 03:28 PM
I dislike the logo because it's ugly - that's all (it isn't unfair, it's just honest). I also don't think the logo makes sense because we agreed to choose a new name - why should we then merge the old logos into one? We surely don't call the new project compyl or beriz ...

To be fair the new logo does say compiL (yes I know its stylistic ;) )... So we have absorbed the beryl 'L'

delfick
April 9th, 2007, 04:35 PM
if you read the thread from the start (i don't expect you to do that :P)

the reason we started to create a merged icon was because it's impossible to put the compiz icon into a userbar and still make it look nice :D

so we decided we'd make a new icon to put into a userbar :D

(suggestions welcome :D, (post them in that thread though :D)
