i'm running kde on kubuntu 7.10. i got compiz to fully work late last night by turning on window decorations in ccsm after starting compiz. unfortunately this morning something has changed and now neither window decorations nor effects seem to work.

when i run compiz --replace, it gives me this output:

$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:0407 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Starting emerald
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0
Window manager warning: 0 stored in GConf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_size is not a reasonable cursor_size; must be in the range 1..128
Window manager warning: Failed to load theme "Clearlooks": Failed to find a valid file for theme Clearlooks

Not initializing the Gtk-Qt theme engine

and then it starts up metacity and i have crappy metacity window borders. no effects are present. i installed fusion-icon today from source to have an easy way to start up kwin again.

both emerald --replace and kde-window-decorator --replace do not change anything, and are quite irrelevant given that compiz has failed to start. they don't die until i ctrl+c them.

kde-window-decorator --replace gives me this output:
QImage::smoothScale: Image is a null image
QImage::smoothScale: Image is a null image

and before you ask, yes, I did turn on AddARGBGLXVisuals.

Make sure you have Desktop Icons enabled. You can check this by right clicking on the desktop, going to Configure Desktop --> Behaviour --> General --> "Show icons on desktop". If this is disabled, enable it, log out, and log back int to compiz. It should now start up for you.
