How do you make the cube stay 3D as opposed to returning to to desktop in Ubuntu Gutsy? I used to be able to just middle click the mouse in PCLinuxOS and the cube would go back into the screen and just stay there. then you could rotate etc.

You need to have the viewport switcher plugin enabled.

Hi adamk
I do have the viewport switcher plugin enabled. I can rotate the cube but as soon as I take my finger off the mouse the cube goes back to desktop...if you know what I mean

Sorry, then I'm not sure. I can start the rotate with the middle mouse button, and just let it go and the cube stays zoomed out while I rotate it.

There doesn't seem to be a way to configure that behaviour. The new behaviour (where the cube remains in rotation mode until a side is selected) was introduced sometime after Gutsy was released, so I don't think it'll be available to Ubuntu users until either Hardy is released, or you choose to install a newer version of Compiz using unofficial packages (such as those available from the gutsy-backports repository) or scripts.

I have added the backports repositories to software sources .Should I uninstall Compiz and the re install?

I think simply upgrading your packages will pull in newer versions of whichever Compiz components are available.

Hi Deciare
I upgraded the packages but dont seem to be able to find the relevant effect (where the cube remains in rotation mode until a side is selected) .Any clues on where I would find that in CCSM ? Maybe I will just have to wait for Hardy ;)

The Viewport Switcher plugin's behaviour was changed, so middle-clicking on the desktop should automatically hold the cube in rotation mode until you put it down. There's no option or new plugin for it.

If that isn't working, then maybe the behaviour you prefer isn't available in the stable release versions of Compiz at all?

Yep looks like its not available right now. No worries I can wait.
Thanks for your help:)

Just a quick update .
I had an extra PS2 mouse plugged in as well as my wireless and it was near the ground went to pick it up when I looked at the screen, low and behold cube zoomed out and held in the middle of the screen !! messed around rotating etc but I could not recreate this after going back to desktop:confused:

I am having the same problem :). Would I have this problem if I installed Feisty Fawn 7.04 instead?

I just successfully installed this on Gentoo(finally!!!! Yea!) and got it working fully. It is with ATI driver 8.452 and AIGLX. I still am having the problem of zooming the Cube outwards and having it stay. Am I just not doing something right? Or maybe I have an incorrect setting? It seems unlikely that this is a bug and more of something I just am not doing right.

I am afraid I could not fix this . I think there is something I'm not doing. When I ran Compiz in PCLinuxOS there was no problem achieving the effect we are after . But I really cant remember how I did it:(

Good news! Well, sort of. I have figured out how to make the cube stay zoomed out. In kind of a ghetto way. If you zoom out the, rotate it where it is titled ether down or upwards, and leave it where the one of the corners are facing you directly, and let go of the mouse button it will stay there. It's kind of like it doesn't know which direction to go. But the moment you move the mouse it will goto that direction and zoom back in. So there you go....at least that's one way. I'm not sure if it's the best way.

heya
i have the same problem, but it was from the previous version of quattro's compiz (think it was a few weeks ago) to git20080219+Qubuntu0
on the previous version, the cube stayed after you let go of the mouse 2 button, is there a way to get back to the previous version of quattro's repo??

Anyone find out how to fix this? Works straight out the box PCLinuxOS but not with Ubuntu Gutsy/Hardy
