Hi,

This message was posted at http://forums.debian.net but I was recommended to make it a separate thread, which I do here. This is my first post, so please, bear with me.

I have tried the "shame repository" but always seem to get the same error - "Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn't going to work."

My setup is a Radeon 2900XT 512MB card using the latest fglrx (8.45 or Catalyst 8.01 for 64-bit Linux) drivers on a Debian Sid AMD64 with KDE 3.5.x.
Some details:

My X version:

$ X -version

X Window System Version 1.3.0
Release Date: 19 April 2007

After having removed and purged all previous installations I now try

apt-get install compiz-fusion-plugins-main compizconfig-settings-manager

from shames repository

and then start it using

compiz --replace &

However, whatever the start options I use I always get

$ compiz --replace &
[1] 4425
shabby@quad:~$ /usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn't going to work.
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

I suspect my xorg.conf may be the culprit, but I have no clue what it might be.

Here is the output of dmesg | grep fglrx as recommended here http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3350

$ dmesg | grep fglrx

and 'ps ax | grep -i xgl' gives

$ ps ax | grep -i xgl
4084 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep -i xgl

I have no idea what the latter two means, but hey someone might... :)

Here is another attempt, now with 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable --indirect-rendering ccp &'

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable --indirect-rendering ccp &
[1] 4541

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

And lastly, here is the long Xorg.0.log for 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable --indirect-rendering ccp &'

[EDIT. I have removed most of it as it was not complete the first time. A complete is provided in a new post below]

Thanks for any help to get this running! I have spent many days on it and am running out of ideas...

There should be a lot more output in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about AIGLX, and it's pretty clear that you didn't post the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. Can you try again, but this time attach it to your post here, rather than including it in the post?

Hi Adam,

Here is the complete Xorg.0.log as an attachment.

Any chance you could try an older version of the X server? People have reported similar problems with X server 1.3.0 on Fedora 8, requiring them to downgrade to the X server package included in Fedora 7. It's possible that this is a similar bug with the driver.

An even older xorg is available in "stable". Ok, so I remove and purge as much as I can and install the new xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-core. Jump back to the unstable and rebuild a new fglrx module using module assistant

module-assistant prepare
module-assistant update
module-assistant build fglrx
module-assistant install fglrx
depmod -a

and restart X.

Inside KDE i can now see that I have the older X:

$ X -version

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1

Current Operating System: Linux quad 2.6.22-3-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Oct 11 15:23:23 UTC 2007 x86_64

Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

Well, unfortunately, I see no reason from your Xorg.0.log file why direct rendering would now be failing. You didn't change anything in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, did you?

Well, I had been playing around with some options before coming here. So, I copied the one listed in the previous message to be sure.

Try uncommenting the DRI section (the last three lines) and then restart X. See if direct rendering now works.

Improvements!!! :)

DRI works. Nice catch!

However, some issues, as in the attached log-files

adamk

Well, that would seem to indicate that the problem is probably not with the version of Xorg being used, so it's probably worth upgrading back to X server 1.3.0.

Let's try to start compiz with the least amount of options and interference:

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace ccp &

Does that give the same error message?

Here with the xorg 7.1

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace ccp &
[1] 3992
shabby@quad:~$ /usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn't going to work.
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

and the Xorg.0.log attached

I will upgrade back to 7.2 (1.3.0 I guess)

While I don't think it will make a difference, let's also pull the compiz-manager script out the equation. Try:

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz.real --replace ccp &

While I don't think it will make a difference, let's also pull the compiz-manager script out the equation. Try:

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz.real --replace ccp &

I did try that a few days ago (no luck), but can do it again.

But back then I did it as compiz.real --replace &

(BTW, I'm not using frame-buffer)

But here are the latest, compiz_002.log and Xorg.0.log

I have a vague recollection that someone had the fglrx kernel module rebuilt using an older version gcc. Could that be something? Unfortunately I don't remember where I read it, or know how I would do it (i.e. pointing module-assistant at an older gcc version).

Just an idea.

If the fglrx kernel module were built with a different version of gcc, I don't think you'd have direct rendering working.... I'm sorry, but I'm pretty much fresh out of ideas here.

The Debian packages don't seem to include the fglrx libGL.so.1.2 binary.
I was getting the same No GLXFBConfig error until I downloaded the fglrx package from ATI, extracted the contents and copied ATI's libGL.so.1.2 file.

I'm not sure what the proper way to do this would be, but I create an fglrx directory under /usr/lib, then copy the fglrx version of libGL.so.1.2 to /usr/lib/fglrx. Then I cd to /usr/lib, delete the current libGL.so.1 link (which was linked to the mesa libGL.so.1.2 file in /usr/lib), then create a link to fglrx/libGL.so.1.2, as in ln -s fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1

I have to delete and restore the libGL.so.1 link after every apt-get update && apt-get upgrade. I'm currently running Lenny using the 8.43.2 fglrx driver.

./ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run --extract ati-7.11
cd /usr/lib
mkdir fglrx
cd fglrx
cp ~/ati-7.11//arch/x86_64/usr/X11R6/lib64/libGL.so.1.2 .
cd ..
rm libGL.so.1
ln -s fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1

After all that, "compiz ccp --replace &" works for me.
I also did the same recently on Mepis 7.0 amd64 to get c-f working with fglrx 8.43.2

Thanks! That worked, even if with a glitch. (I just switched your 7-11 to the current 8.01 where needed)

I consider this SOLVED, even if I entered a new class of error messages which I think may better be pursued in another thread if needed:

Despite that and that I still don't get any widgets I note that the wobbly windows are there. I just need to switch windows to have them vibrate as of jelly. Also, the 3D cube is there and works, but all without widgets.

I downloaded emerald and installed that too, using emerald --replace &., but it didn't help.

Anyway, I'm almost there.

Thanks all for the help! :)

Oh, cool. Glad you got it working. As for your missing emerald problem, make sure you have the window decoration plugin enabled in ccsm.

cestlaz, thanks for helping out. I completely forgot that with the last few fglrx releases, it was completely possible to have direct rendering by using the Mesa libGL file and that compiz still wouldn't work without the fglrx one :-)

Hah! I just tried in a wild and crazy guess typing the word "any" into the empty(!) field "Window decorations", and, it worked!!! Yeah! Thanks for pointing me to that screen!

Whoaw! It looks great.

EDIT... Ok, let me rephrase my exuberance... ;)

Apparently it was only a Gnome session that had the 3D cube, yet. KDE failed on me with "A handler is already registered for the path starting with path[0] = "org" something.

Also, both the Gnome and KDE freezes when I try to log out, and my graphic card's fan start to spin really hard (unless it is the cpu fans? Can't tell them apart).

That's not a fatal error message. If compiz refused to start up under KDE, it should have said something else, too.

As for KDE... Make sure you have disabled any of the fancy KDE effects (like transparency and shadows), and make sure that desktop icons are enabled.

Ok, KDE is up and running with wobbly windows and a 3D cube. Thanks! :)

Still, just about every option is greyed out under KDE and I can't activate the water effect, which I could under Gnome. Any ideas wherein lies the difference?

Odd... Make sure the backend under ccsm --> preferences is the same when you're logged into gnome as when you're logged into KDE. If not, set the backend when in KDE to the same as when using gnome, and it should use the same preferences for KDE as you have in gnome.

Hi,

I only have one backend installed (or at least visible), the "Flat-file Configuration Backend".

Well the any changes you make in ccsm while using the flat-file backend should remain in tact, whether in KDE or GNOME. Is this not happening?

I can only make any changes in Gnome, and they are not transferred to KDE.

EDIT: And, the openGL does not work correct as indicated above with glxinfo. And fglrxinfo is also bad.

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1.7276 Release)

Segmentation fault

Strange, as this is written in a Gnome session with a working 3D cube and e.g. the water effects working... There must be something wrong with the errors too today.

EDIT 2:
Here I attach my Xorg.0.log from inside a Compiz-Fusion Gnome session where typing glxinfo and fglrxinfo in a console both result in a "Segmentation fault".

EDIT 3:
This is written from inside KDE a few minutes after EDIT 2. The 3D cube and the water effect (set by me to Alt-R in Gnome) are not activated per default at the login. I need to start them in a console window, with replace etc. glxinfo and fglrxinfo both result in the "Segmentation fault" as described above for Gnome. Attached is a second ("20090129b") Xorg.0.log, but now from inside a KDE session.
