Is that KDE4 I see in the screenshot?

Starting Compiz in KDE4 will always cause that to happen; I haven't found a way around it. You can fix the problem after Compiz starts by changing ccsm->General Options->Desktop Size->Number of Desktops to 2, then back to 1.

You'll also need to right-click on the pager and select Pager Settings, then change Number of rows back to 2.

If anyone knows of a quicker way to do this, like with a D-Bus script or a modification to fusion-icon, I'd be happy to know.

In case I'm mistaken and you're actually using KDE3, look at http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=46021 and http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=61169 for modified versions of the taskbar and pager applets that work better with Compiz.

I have the same problem in kde4 and in KDE 3.5.8,

In KDE 3.5.8 i have resolved such :

ccsm->General Options->Desktop Size->Number of Desktop = 4
Dimension of virtual orizzontal = 1
Dimension of virtual verical = 1

Such as a print-screen configuration

That will work, but will cause Compiz's own viewport management plugins--Cube, Wall, Plane, and Expo--to be quite unusable. If you don't mind that, then yes, problem solved.
