Some kind of image-verification thing on the register page should cut down on the spam a bit.

Very sad.
Whise, can you announce the new version of screenlets and release tarballs?
This way I could point packagers of new version. The pack avaliable for OpenSUSE is very buggy:

Make registration mandatory for editing.
Add the OpenID extension so that it's not much of a matter for legit users.

Please someone fix this! We need a captcha or something.
I removed huge amounts of spam from the faq 3 hours ago, and it's already back. Yikes.

According to http://screenlets.org/index.php/Special:Listusers?username=&limit=50&group=sysop
he is the only one in charge.
Too bad. Manual removal of spam is futile with the rate of these bots.

(EDIT: And of course they are bots. No human works this fast :) )

I think that will be very, very confusing for users. I say, wait for reply from RYX, and we'll do our best in the meantime. (Even if that might take some time.)
I have put in the Ubuntu repo in the faq. We have access to that, so that can be used heavily to communicate.

I put in info for the sourceforge files in the faq. Can someone please go through the faq?

Rome wasn't built within one day.....;)
We must let the time go and wait a little for signals from RYX.
I have sent him a mail and probably others have done the same.
The trunk is done and it was a big step and packages are available for
OpenSuse and Debian/Ubuntu, also an easy way for brave users to use dev code for latest changes.
RYX has only protected himself at screenlets.org and what version he stands for.
If he has time he can audit this new version and also give permission for others to change screenlets.org. A captcha system is of course also needed.
Open Source challengies.... :)

Where are the OpenSUSE packages? Instructions need to go in the faq.
BTW: We need more permissions to make a new page on the wiki, right? Because the faq is getting loooong.

Are you referring to the faq? The only reference to screenlets-new in the faq is for uninstalling. The others are to trunk. If I'm wrong point me to where it is, and I'll fix it.

If the spam bots are capable of putting in text, maybe someone can make a script to remove it. How about someone set up a script that runs a couple of times every day, that deletes everything above:
"__NOEDITSECTION__" in
http://screenlets.org/index.php?title=Screenshots&action=edit
http://screenlets.org/index.php?title=FAQ&action=edit
http://screenlets.org/index.php?title=Help:Editing&action=edit
To keep spam under some control until RYX reappears.

There are currently hundreds of spam bots registered as users: http://screenlets.org/index.php/Special:Listusers
Can they be removed?

Yup, I cannot see any problem with that, but maybe its a good idea to write a note on the frontpage and a "sorry" if someones real account is removed.

Don't delete mine, and I'm happy ;-)
Seriously, the easiest way would be to just remove all of them, and just have people register over. But not until a captcha or something is up. Otherwise, the bots will just re-register and the work will have to be redone.

Yup, I cannot see any account details and if its possible to use a "cleaning machine".
Its probably easiest start over after spam protection is established.
