OK, well, I am very new to Ubuntu but I need to install Emerald to get a Windows Vista look working properly. My Ubuntu computer does not have internet on it (wireless, so I'm working on it) so I need to download the tarball listed above. I have it downloaded and transferred onto my Ubuntu computer via a flash drive, and now that I have the tarball, I extracted it. Now what do I do to complete the installation process? Like I said, I'm VERY new to Ubuntu.
EDIT: I am using Ubuntu Gutsy, the newest version.

first, do you have compiz running?
next, .debs are available:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/e/emerald/emerald_0.3~git20070717-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/e/emerald/libemeraldengine0_0.3~git20070717-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/e/emerald-themes/emerald-themes_0.2.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb

download, and when you put it on ubuntu, the installation should be easy ( Doable Click, Click Install, done :D)
then do Alt+F2 and type emerald --replace

Isn't Compiz bundled with Ubuntu? If not, can you please direct me to a .deb and sort of explain it for me? Sorry about the trouble, I'm a total Ubuntu 'noob' :p. I'm gonna install emerald right now onto my Ubuntu computer. Hope I can get my Vista theme up and running today!
EDIT: Took a look at the Compiz Fusion thread. From the looks of things, would I just download .deb's 2 and 5 - Compiz Fusion 0.6.0 and Dependencies on Debian/Ubuntu Gnome and Additional Plugins and Dependencies for Gutsy/Amarath's Gutsy Backports repo which also installs Tile and Snow?
EDIT: Ah, they're tarballs. Any kind of tutorial you could give as to install tarballs? All I know is "cd (location of folder)" and then press enter. Then type "sudo make install" and hit enter. Then again, that only works for SOME extracted tarballs, as the others will give me a Stop message in the terminal.

Compiz is Bundled with ubuntu, however it is not enabled by default ;)
in change your desktop background there is a tab called visual effects, try getting extra working, then get ccsm:
compizconfig-python (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/compizconfig-python/python-compizconfig_0.5.2+git20070912-0ubuntu1_i386.deb)
compizconfig-settings-manager (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/compizconfig-settings-manager/compizconfig-settings-manager_0.5.2+git20070912-0ubuntu1_all.deb)

If it gives an error, open a terminal and run 'compiz --replace'
and paste the output here :D

PS1: You must select extra for ccsm to work, but you can reduce the number of running plugins

Thanks some-guy! This should keep me occupied for a while! But another (hopefully final) question: You said I have to select extra for ccsm to work, but I can reduce the number of running plugins. What exactly do you mean by that? Whew, from the lack of knowledge of Compiz, Emerald, and Ubuntu, I barely even deserve to use any of the three! :P

there are different configuration plugins used by compiz.

the 'gconf' plugin loads a lower amount of plugins by default on ubuntu, but to edit it you have to use gconf-editor (which is just barely easier than windows's registry editor ;))

the 'ccp' plugin which is loaded by extra, loads more plugins and ccsm can configure it. In ccsm you can enable/disable/configure as many plugins as you want, (though you need the main plugins like move, place, etc :D) and make it use less or more of your system ;)

Also, the 'generic' way of installing a tarball on ubuntu is
./configure
make sudo make install
But most of the time you need other dependencies as well :p

So select the ccp plugin... right? Uh... how? This is just getting embarassing for me!
EDIT: I used the gconf-editor only once, and that was to modify the image of my menu button to look like Vista's start button. From the looks of things, it's all Greek to me. Luckily, though, I had a tutorial to tell me how to modify the menu button. If I didn't I'm sure I would have modified something I shouldn't have and I would have destroyed my computer!

By selecting extra :D

Yeah, that I know, selecting Extra I mean. But where do I select Extra?

Where you change your desktop bg
in change your desktop background there is a tab called visual effects, try getting extra working,

I never saw custom though...

Oh, THAT one! Duh! Alright, I know EXACTLY what you mean now. But I do remember trying to enable Normal before and it failed to do so, so if it doesn't enable Extra does that mean In can't use Compiz nor Emerald?

yes you won't be able to use either, paste the output of 'compiz --replace' and your video card and model so we can get it working

Alright, I'll attempt to enable Extra once I install Emerald and Compiz. If it doesn't work, then I will go into the terminal and input "compiz --replace" to get that info and get my video card info from... it would be the hardware manager (or something similar to that name) correct? Or would "compiz --replace" give me that info as well?
EDIT: Ah what the heck, I'm just gonna install the .deb's and see what happens. I'll tell you this now - my computer that I have Ubuntu on is an old junker - a 386. The graphics card is more than likely something to be laughed at. This computer, however, will be getting Ubuntu on it soon once I can get another computer that has Windows on it (Need my online games - EndlessOnline, MapleStory, and Death Before Dishonor(My online game I made with a program called Eclipse)!). I didn't intend to advertise just there, so if you thought of that as advertising, I apologize.

Download
ATi Driver (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/l/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22/fglrx-control_8.37.6+2.6.22.4-14.10_i386.deb)
Nvidia Driver (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/l/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22/nvidia-glx-new_100.14.19+2.6.22.4-14.10_i386.deb)
Xgl (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xserver-xgl/xserver-xgl_7.2.0.git.20070224-0ubuntu3_i386.deb)
fusion-icon (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/f/fusion-icon/fusion-icon_0.0.0+git20071028-0ubuntu2_all.deb)

then go to System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager
and install the correct driver and fusion-icon
if it is nvidia run
sudo nvidia-xconfig --composite
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals -d 24

if it is ATi, install the Xgl package

Afterward try again
if it works run gconf-editor and go to desktop > gnome > applications > window_manager and change current and default to fusion-icon

if it doesn't work, try running fusion-icon
