EDIT BY DELFICK : I've moved the opensuse related posts from this thread here (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6427&highlight=ATI+Radeon+x1650)
because this thread is actually a duplicate of that thread by the same author, this post is actually before the first post of this original thread...

Hello, i am new to this forum my name is Vitaliy. I am new to linux also. I am running opensuse 10.3. and my video card is x1650. I am going crazy on compiz fusion and was trying to enable it for more then 1 moth already and nothing helps. I was running Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora core 8 an open suse 10.3 (wich i think is the best :)) ok so back to my prob. i want to run compiz but when i do that eaven befora i enable it in the bar thats what it says.

Your graphics card is not known to be supported by Xgl, and it is not currently configured for 3D acceleration. Xgl cannot be enabled. However, if 3D acceleration can be enabled on this card, then it might be possible to run Xgl.

You might be able to fix this using the SaX2 configuration tool. Press the button below if you'd like to try running SaX2.

If you are having problems configuring Desktop Effects, you can click the "Help" button below to visit the troubleshooting page on the openSUSE wiki for advice.

Well i am trying to figure out if ATI Radeon x1650 is supported by opensuse 10.3
also i dont know how to install the proper driver for that card and my card is supported by 3 d effects cuz when i was running windows before i had everything 3 cube and all of that so help me pliz I am very very frastrated.

I'm not Adam, but cyberorg provides Compiz Fusion packages for openSuSE (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=1415). :)

Is that the guide you followed? What didn't you understand about it?

You installed :the x1600 driver", what exactly do you mean? There is only one blanket driver that covers all the cards from ATI.

hello

I use ubuntu, so I don't know much about fedora or opensuse, but after looking at opensuse' documentation (assuming you're using opensuse now) then following the instructions over here (http://en.opensuse.org/ATI#openSUSE_10.3) means all you have to do is

# click here (http://opensuse-community.org/ati-legacy.ymp)
# Open a terminal and type "sudo aticonfig --initial" to configure the xserver
# logout and press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart the xserver
and then you're graphics card should be installed

then to install compiz/compiz-fusion, click here if you're using kde as your desktop environment.

good luck :D

(btw, I've changed your thread title to better reflect your original problem)

A blank screen when starting X sounds like a driver problem which we may, or may not, be able to help with. It could, in fact, be a bug in the driver that only ATI/AMD can resolve. However, we'd need to look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file before we could make that determination. Is there anyway for you to upload that file to a website somewhere (line http://pastebin.ca/ )? You could boot into failsafe mode, log in at the terminal, and then copy your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to your home directory. You could then run 'sax2-vesa' to reconfigure your X server to use the vesa driver. Once you reboot, you'll be able to get into KDE or gnome again and then can paste your old log file to http://pastebin.ca/

let me break down adamk's post for you :D

A blank screen when starting X sounds like a driver problem which we may, or may not, be able to help with.

It could, in fact, be a bug in the driver that only ATI/AMD can resolve.
basically, it might be the only people who can fix your problems with that particular card is ATI/AMD
(the people making the driver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_driver) for it)

However, we'd need to look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file before we could make that determination.

that file might contain errors that will help us solve your problem

to get it, when you log into the failsafe terminal, do the following

$ cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Desktop
which will copy the file in question to your Desktop

$ sax2-vesa
which will reconfigure the xserver to use the vesa driver, which is like a failsafe driver, which means it will work, (but don't expect any special effects, or anything to be even fast...)

$ sudo reboot
reboot your computer

once you've rebooted and logged in, you should see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file on your desktop,
open it up,
copy the contents,
go to http://pastebin.ca/ and paste the contents there,
submit it and give us the resulting url

good luck :D

Try logging in at the console (or in safe mode) and removing compiz-manager and compiz ( 'sudo rpm -e compiz-manager compiz' *should* do that). Then reboot and try logging back in again.

follow the guide here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Getting_Started_with_openSUSE#ATI_Video_Drivers

To get rid of blank screen:

aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --force

Compiz-manager is installed via 1-click from here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion

ccsm is not compiz-manager.
