Hi, I just switched to Ubuntu from being a decently proficient windows user and I feel like me using linux is like my 90 year old grandmother turning on a computer for the first time. Anyway, specific to compiz, I've installed it but it doesn't seem to want to run. It says it failed and is starting Metacity. I don't know if this has to do with it but when I try go into visual effects in appearance preferences I'm unable to switch to normal or extra. My video card is an intel graphics accelerator x3100. I have a 2 month old sony vaio cr220 which came with vista so I know it's capable of looking slightly better than how it does now, which is comparable to probably the first computer ever made. I've now spent hours trying to read about how to use this compiz thing and I cannot get it to work at all. Any advice anyone could give me at all would be SO greatly appreciated!
:confused:
Thanks

Let's start with the most basic thing: your 3D driver. We need to make sure it's setup properly. Can you show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file? You should be able to reply to this post and upload it as an attachment. Also, the output of 'glxinfo' will make sure you have 3D acceleration working. You can run that command in a terminal (such as gnome-terminal), highlight the output, copy it, and paste it in your reply, preferably between [ code ] [ /code ] tags (note that when using the code tags, there's really no space between the [ and code and ] ).

hello

you might want to read this http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/announcement.php?f=85 :D
and I've changed your thread title :D
(sorry, I can't help with the problem at hand atm)

@adamk, you can use tags to properly display tags :)

OK, so now's the output you get if you run 'compiz --replace ccp &' in a terminal?

Ubuntu blacklists some chipset which have problems with video playback with running compiz.

See if compiz starts up fine if you run 'SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz --replace ccp &'

If so, you can permanently get compiz to skip those checks by running:

$ mkdir ~/.config/compiz/
$ echo SKIP_CHECKS=yes >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager

And then you should be able to start compiz from the appearances preferences.

Well, based on what you posted, compiz is running. You probably just need to configure it as you like with compiz config settings manager (ccsm), which you may first need to install with 'sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager'.

when i do ccsm in terminal i have this

AttributeError: 'compizconfig.Plugin' object has no attribute 'Initialized'

when i do sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

i have this

Reading package lists... Done

compizconfig-settings-manager is already the newest version.

Please start a new thread for this problem. This is a completely separate issue from what the original poster was experiencing :-)

In your post, please paste the output from ccsm, as well as the output of 'dpkg -l | grep compiz'.

We haven't heard back from lxtines that compiz is now working for him, so I was hesitant to mark this as solved :-)
