Hi, I have had no joy with compiz on ubuntu 7:10. I reverted to 7:04 and it took me 5 mins to install beryl and get that working so no probs with my ATI X600 card.

When I install 7:10 I go to visual effects but I can not invoke the compiz extras. So, I need an ATI driver. I install this, now I can get limited effects (eg. wobbly windows) working but I can not invoke "CompizConfig Settings Manager". When I run ccsm from the command line it crashes.

Basically, does anyone have a procedure for running compiz with an ATI card (VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600])? Is this card a no-no?

My main concern is that this works almost "out of the box" with Beryl but with Compiz I get no joy. If I can supply any more info pls advise.

A) You shouldn't need the driver from the restricted manager... Ubuntu blacklists the open source driver, though, do to X-Video problems you might run into. If you have the fglrx driver working with compiz, and want to leave it, that's your decision.

B) "it crashes" is not very informative. Please let us know what error message you get when it crashes.

When ccsm is not starting, that's mostly due to mixed packages.

Post the output of dpkg -l | grep compiz and use the forum's CODE tag please (# button)

I sort of have the same problem. I just installed ubuntu 7.10 for the first time. My brother helped me to install compiz but he didn't check to make sure my ati card would be compatible. It's a radeon 9800 which I'm pretty positive ISN'T because my computer is running sooo slow and I can't do anything. When i tried to uninstall compiz i got
package compiz is not installed, so not removed.
But i know it must be installed because I can't do ANYTHING. I would like to revert back to whatever kubuntu came with but i don't know how. Please help!

1) Did you guys install Kubuntu or Ubuntu? Kubuntu 7.10 doesn't ship with compiz by default (only Ubuntu). What output does 'compiz --replace ccp &' produce?

2) Your radeon 9800 is quite compatible with compiz and should run it just fine with the open source drivers that ship with (K)ubuntu.

3) What do you mean by "revert back to"? kwin is the window manager that KDE (and therefore Kubuntu) uses by default. Do you not currently have a working window manager?
