Effects sluggish on ATI 8.433 drivers w/ AIGLX

Ok, I have AIGLX working. Here is what I did:
1. Unmerged Xgl
2. Followed the ATI Drivers and AIGLX how-to's on Gentoo's wiki
3. Reinstalled the 8.433 ATI drivers

So, now AIGLX is working without Xgl, direct rendering is working, and all is well.
The only problem is that these new drivers make the effects somewhat sluggish.

Are there any other options or anything I can do to improve the smoothness of the effects?

Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done. The issue is with the fglrx drivers, which just aren't great performers with AIGLX at the moment.

FYI, if improving the speed is really important to you, I'd recommend either using Xgl or, if your card is supported, the open source drivers.
