I would like:
Padding from Desktop edge for maximized windows
so that, a maximised window does not take up the whole desktop area, i tried to explain in a screenshot:

I'd like this.
I hate maximising windows because, what's the point of having a multi-tasking OS if I'm only going to look at one thing at a time? But having other windows peeking out from beneath the edges of a "maximised" window would be quite acceptable.
You may also be interested in the Maximumize (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=5259) plugin, currently a work in progress, which lets you make a window as large as it can be without covering up other windows.
The OS X style of maximise, where a window becomes just large enough to remove both the horizontal (and optionally vertical) scrollbars, would be wonderful as well. I do that anyway by resizing the window, so it'd be lovely to have it done automatically.

Well, you can hack this together by setting up your outputs. I.e: Output 1: 1280x1024+0+0, output 2: 1200x944+40+40.
This will cause compiz to act as if you have two monitors displaying the same area, but the second one will be smaller than the real screen. You may have to switch the order around, but this will cause maximization to fit to the smallest head if done right, thus achieving what you want.
It will also affect other things, unfortunately, like snapping, and you'll want to set the majority of multi-head aware plugins up for "one big screen" behavior. I wouldn't really call this a final solution to the request, but it's something.
I may add things like this to maximumize with time, but that wouldn't replace the existing maximize, but rather compliment it.

I tend to use vertical maximization (middle button mouse click on maximize button) for these purposes.

I think it would be useful to be able to limit the space that windows occupy when maximized so that a certain portion of the desktop will always be visible when a window is maximized. People could put important icons or screenlets there so that they would remain visible.
Shouldn't be too hard since apps like gnome-panel or AWN or Kiba Dock already do something like that...
