I have just sucessfully installed the New Ati Drivers 8.43

andy@hh206a:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 GTO
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7059 Release

And Beryl Works very well (apart from the Window Decs)

So i decided to uninstall Beryl and install Compiz Fusion all went well apart from this

andy@hh206a:~$ compiz --replaceChecking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"

And finally, here is my X11/conf File.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.

Try starting compiz with:

$ SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz --replace ccp &

If that works, you can get it to permanently skip the checks with:

$ mkdir -p ~/.config/compiz; echo SKIP_CHECKS=yes >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
