According to the official FAQ (http://wubi.sourceforge.net/faq.php), the key difference between Wubi and a standard Ubuntu install is that Wubi installs to a single file in a Windows filesystem instead of installing to a separate partition. It claims to be functionally identical to dual-booting Windows and a standard installation of Ubuntu, so anything that works on Ubuntu should also work on Wubi. This includes all packages and updates, as well as support for Compiz Fusion.

I've heard that Wubi is extra-sensitive to sudden power offs and hard resets without unmounting the virtual disk partition, though, so depending on the physical security of your computing environment, it may be more fragile than Ubuntu.

I'm saying this from Wubi/Ubuntu now, Wubi installs Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Gutsy version is not stable yet) to 3 files, one for home, one for filesystem, and one for swap, you get a dual boot with grub4dos and you can upgrade all the software BUT you CANNOT upgrade the ubuntu version, wubi installs some software onto ubuntu which allows it to run from files, but the software is incompatible with Gutsy(latest), it also doesn't allow you to logout then login, and hibernate/standby don't work, if something goes wrong, boot windows and shut it off (windows just needs to do some cleanup ;)), also frequently defragment, and you can use my script to install compiz fusion on it :D

Out of curiosity, what happens when you log out from Wubi? What stops you from logging back in?

I think the X-server doesn't like to be restarted (everything is a black screen), but once I did actually login and heard the sound, but there was no visuals ;)

I have another problem I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a hard drive I bought ok, the installtion went fine adn I upgrade to 7.10, it asked me if I wanted to use my graphic card , ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Series, I said yes and restarted the computer, then I want to run the Desktop effects and my computer froze, do you guys think is because Ubuntu doesn't support my Video card?

Did you originally install Ubuntu 7.04 from Wubi or a regular Ubuntu install CD? Wubi doesn't work with 7.10.

If you installed from a regular Ubuntu disk, why didn't you skip straight to 7.10 instead of upgrading?

upgrading is BROKEN, don't want to say it harshly but a 7.10 version is in alpha, and upgrading will break your installation, upgrading other packages is fine though, but not the whole thing :D

again, no offense intended ;)

We're talking about this in the context of Wubi. ^^; The Wubi installer does not support any version of Ubuntu newer than 7.04, as far as I've heard.

So you installed from the cd(not wubi) and upgrading broke it? try downloading the latest version and installing that :D

try running sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl compizconfig-settings-manager in a terminal and restart, then select 'extra' and in System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager, you can adjust your settings

NOTE: You have to select extra for the settings you adjust to take place but you can choose what you want to enable and/or disable to make it equivalent to 'normal'
