View Full Version : Auto Grouping/Tabbing Windows?

Manually grouping windows is a pain in the ass, though it's nice to have that option.
For instance, I would rather that all of GIMP's windows are grouped automatically. In that instance, any type of window from the same application. There would be exceptions in my usage, ex. pidgin.
I would also rather that any window of the same type be tabbed automatically. (ex. composing multiple emails)
Group + Tab windows will only let you do this kind of thing manually, which really just kills it's usefulness in different situations.

Enabling the option at ccsm->Group and Tab Windows->Misc. Options->Autotab windows on creation will cause every window to be given its own tab group by default, so you can just drag and drop them onto each other to tab them. That will save you the trouble of having to select, then group, then tab them manually, but I understand that it's not what you were asking for.
A request was made (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3905) earlier to allow users to define window matching rule lists that automatically group and/or tab certain windows together on creation, but we haven't heard from a developer yet.

I would imagine that in most cases, having to tab windows would mean that the application should do that in the first place (ex. Evince). However, there are certain applications where it would be useful to have internal tabbing, yet inappropriate due to design constraints (ex. multiple sessions of an office suite).
On a different level, dealing with applications that implement multi-window interfaces would really benefit from this feature, though I honestly believe they are flawed by design for the most part. I really shouldn't be forced to worry about managing 3-4 windows when I'm screwing around with photos or making graphics for something.

I like to tab between multiple instances of OpenOffice. Could be a nice addition actually. (Especially when FF tries to spawn new windows).
Could be a neat way to replace firefox tabs. Instead of seeing the tab bar, we just hover over the window title and we have all the tabs we want :D

I'd like to see this feature, too.
For what it's worth, I figured out that it was possible in The GIMP to click and drag the various dialogs between windows, thus customising which dialogs were in which windows; I dragged everything into the main tool selection window. Now there's just one main dialog, besides the image window (see attached image). ;)
