I was using ubuntu feisty with beryl a long while ago, and after a lot of trouble, I finally figured out how to tile windows. The feature was part of beryl at the time.

However, I just installed gutsy and I can't find how to do it with the preinstalled compiz.

The Tile plugin is part of the plugins-unsupported package, which isn't included in Ubuntu Gutsy. It's available from git, but unfortunately, you won't be able to compile any plugins from git against the version of Compiz included in Gutsy. If you'd like to use any plugins from git, you'll need to compile and install the rest of Compiz from git as well...

You may try this guide and script (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3960) for Ubuntu Gutsy, or this very well-tested guide for Ubuntu Feisty (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=1985) (whose instructions should still apply for Gutsy).
