Ok, I just don't get this.

My main system:
Fedora 7
2 GB RAM
Dual Core Athlon XP 3800+
1 year old Nvidia 7300 GS, PCIe 16x, 512MB.
Nvidia legacy 96.43 drivers (or 100.14.09, makes no difference)

Crappy old system:
Mandriva One 2008
256 MB RAM
1.5 GHz AMD CPU (don't remember exactly)
Old Radeon 7200 AGP, 32 MB
Using ATI drivers

I installed Mandriva One just for fun on this old dog, and quite awesomely, it comes with Compiz Fusion right out of the bag. What is absolutely baffling to me is that Compiz Fusion is around 10x as smooth on this old system as my main system. Intially, it started in 16 bpp, which I already know is going to be easier for the GPU to handle, so I put it into 24 bpp (same as my main system), and it is still considerably smoother than my main system. So my question is: "What the hell is going on???" Is the 5+ year old Radeon 7200 better than 1 year old Nvidia 7300GS?

I know that the Mandriva system is using different drivers, obviously since it is an ATI card. But is there something dead obvious that I'm missing that can make my main system as smooth as this? I've already toyed with stuff like:

Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "RandRRotation" "true"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "Coolbits" "1"
Option "DamageEvents" "True"

...to no avail. On my main system, I'm using direct rendering, no sync to vblank, and loose binding.
