I'm using Compiz-Fusion 0.6.0 and this is the problem:
1. Use a UTF-8 locale. I'm using "en_US.UTF-8".
2. Open xterm terminal.
3. Create a directory with Unicode characters in the name.
4. CD into that directory.
5. The directory is displayed incorrectly in the title bar. For example "ÄÄ" becomes "Ã?Ã?" showing that it is trying to render 2 UTF-8 characters as 4 ISO characters.
I'm using Compiz-Fusion as standalone WM in Gentoo: no Gnome, no KDE, Only Compiz 0.6.2 and Emerald 0.5.2. Changing the font in Emerald doesn't help.
There is a similar thread but with a different setup. He was using KDE and didn't have the problem with just Emerald:

(So this is not the same issue)
