Ok, here are my system settings:
Gentoo ~amd64 (unstable)
compiz-fusion installed using:
ACCEPT_KEYWORS="* ~*" emerge compiz-fusion
the gfx driver is the latest intel driver from portage. gfx hardware is Q965
The System has a builtin DVI sDVO card, and i'm using a DVI and a VGA connected monitor in xinerama setup.
when i start compiz (by entering compiz-start in the terminal), compiz seems to start, but no window-borders appear.
beryl worked on this machine (albeit without xinerama).

The intel drivers do not support direct rendering when xinerama is enabled. You will want to either switch to mergedfb or use randr, depending on the version of Xorg you have installed.

glxgears DO work ...
I use the latest stable version of Xserver.
Maybe my initial description was a bit misleading
i followed the directions on
http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html
for a static setup. so it should be xrandr.

Try this command and see what error messages you get:
$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable ccp &

I tried it. the same problem as with compiz-start:
compiz starts, but no window bordesrs are here, no matter if i start emerald before or after
compiz. emerald also starts !?!

Do you get any error messages from emerald when you start it?
Are you sure the window decoration plugin is enabled in ccsm?

ok, i needed to enable the plugin, thx. (i'm stupid ...)
this plugin somehow fights with the colortable plugin and the video-playback plugin.
However, the next problem bites now:
no useful window decorations are drawn (see screenshot).
this happened with emerald ( i have tried several different themes, to be sure),
and gtk-window-decorator (which should use metacity's default theme).
Maybe i made another noob mistake ...
also, is there any hard limit like 2048x2048 in the code ? the right 500 pixeld or so on my right monitor aren't filled with the sektop background once compiz started.

The 965 probably does have a 2048 limit.
As for those large white borders... I'm honestly at a loss to say what the problem is. You might want to try resetting your compiz settings ('rm -r ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/' ) and restarting compiz to see if they go away.

deleting this dir didn't help either, but thanks for your help anyway.
I'll try without 2 monitors sometime later, or a later version in the future.
