have you installed compiz/compiz-fusion ??
all plugins necessary for that will already be installed when you install that
(if you haven't already, tell us your distro and graphics card and we'll point you to an appropiate guide)

also, that's an old version of beryl, compiz-fusion is much better :D
i.e. we have taskbar thumbnail previews and flip3d effect as well now :D (as well as quite a bit more too)

and the dock looks like a really old version of kiba-dock (www.kiba-dock.org)

One thing is puzzling me, I've seen dozens of these videos with blue fire and other fire animations, however i can only get the normal fir (red orange and yellow ;)). How could I change the burn effect so other collors would appear?

Cheers.

EDIT:
Nevermind me, saw it. It was under the effects propreties.
I apologize for jumping in your topic also!

ccsm -> Animations -> Effect settings -> fire -> randomly coloured fire

Hmm... You are seeing
the Desktop Cube plugin (included in Compiz) decorated with an animated skydome
the Application Switcher plugin (included in Compiz)
the Water Effect plugin (included in Compiz)
the Wobbly Windows plugin (included in Compiz)
the Burn, Glide, and Magic Lamp effects of the Animations plugin (part of plugins-main)
the Window Previews plugin (part of plugins-main)
the 3D Windows plugin (part of plugins-unsupported)

Interestingly, it seems that the options that causes water to ripple out from underneath a window when it's released is no longer present.

As delfick mentioned, Compiz Fusion has a Flip 3D effect as well. ^_^ It's part of the Shift Switcher plugin, which can operate in either Flip 3D-like or Cover Flow-like modes.

Someone else could conceivably construct a configuration scheme exactly like what's presented in the video, but wouldn't it be fun to mess with it yourself? :D If you need any help with specific effects, you can always ask here.

Haha that's one of the things i was actually wondering about, too! Anyway, yeah I guess I'll just experiment and play around with it. Thanks!

Hi,

I am very new to compiz-fusion and I don't know how to customize the "Magic Lamp" settings to get it to look like the YouTube video.

Can someone post the settings that I need to have?

Thanks, th3gh05t

The setting at ccsm->Animations->Effect Settings->Magic Lamp->Magic Lamp Max Waves has to be set to 0. But the minimum on that setting is 3 in order to avoid potential legal concerns about Apple's genie minimise effect. To set it any lower, you'll need to modify the animation plugin. There's a guide to how you can do that on the Ubuntu forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=557491).

ccsm -> rotate -> set "zoom" to anything but zero

:D

(also, you might like the cube reflection plugin :D)

which ones don't you already have installed?
if you have compiz/compiz-fusion installed already....
go into the ccsm (apt:compizconfig-settings-manager) to play around with the settings for different plugins....

I'm new to Linux also, and I cant for the life of me find the ccsm, can anyone help me out? I feel really dumb, it's probably right in front of me, but oh well. I'm running an Acer Aspire 3690 (the next model up from the laptops that they demo the 3D cube effect on on YouTube a lot), and I had the 3D cube working with Beryl, so I know its not necessarily the hardware.

BTW, I am running PCLinuxOS 2007, so if you can specify the process according to that, please do, if not, hopefully i can figure it out (I'm not completely illiterate to Linux, but I am a novice).

Sorry.. I meant the one that I had highlighted in my previous post.

the 3D Windows plugin (part of plugins-unsupported)

How can I get this working? I have gone to the General Settings, and there is a spot in there that makes reference to Raised Windows, but I son't think that this is the same thing, as it was stated earlier that it is part of plugins-unsupported. By plugins-unsupported, does this mean that we can not get it working for compiz?

What distribution are you using? If it's Ubuntu 7.10, check out this thread:

You can probably use the same thread to install the 3D driver. The other option is to use the xeffects overlay and install compiz from git that way... Even if the 3D windows plugin isn't available in the overlay, you can always install that directly from git.

It was a hack...

I missed it however - but I'm sure that someone could hack together a DBUS / Python script to handle it :)

By the way, Magic Lamp with 0 waves requires you to patch up certain parts of compiz, but I can't tell you which ones otherwise I will be sued into the ground by apple (And I have a life ahead of me. .. so uh, sorry :P)

No, this script won't work in Gentoo.
Were you referring to the instructions for building the 3D Windows plugin at this thread (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=5303)? What kinds of errors are you receiving?

BlackenedBlood, it's easier for us if you would create a new thread for each question you have, as well as letting us know what video card, distribution, and desktop environment (ie. KDE, gnome, xfce4) you are using.

Exactly what did you enable? The plugin called "Paint fire on the screen" will not give you fire for window opening and closing animations. To do that, you need to go to ccsm->Animations and select the Burn effect for the kinds of windows you wish to animate under the Open and Close Animation tabs.

and why are all my open applications on my taskbar? i thought only the ones on the current desktop should b there?
That depends on which Linux distribution and desktop environment you're using.

Hello all. Having some interesting issues. I'm running Gutsy with Nvidia card. Most everything is working fine. I got the cube to rotate, changed the cube caps, etc. I'm interested in the fire animation when minimizing/closing a window. I went into CCSM then into Animations, set the appropriate drop downs to Glide1 as suggested above. Then when I went back to the main menu I noticed that the check box next "Animations" was not checked (it was checked before). So I went back in and "Enabled Animations" hit the back button with the same results: unchecked! For some reason the check boxes aren't sticking.

When this does start working, to make the flames blue, someone mentioned to choose "random colors." I assume this doesn't change it to blue only. It draws on random colors, yes? Is there not a way to make it blue all the time?

Any help would be appreciated.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Please open ccsm, click on the Preferences link near the lower-left corner of the window, then disable the Enable integration into the desktop environment option. See if that allows your options to stay set. If you still have problems, return to the Preferences page and select Flat-file configuration backend from the dropdown list in the middle.

Just above the setting for randomly coloured fire, at ccsm->Animations->Effect Settings->Fire Particle Colour, you can choose one specific colour for the fire.

Thank you very much for the reply. I tried both disabling the "Enable..." and changing it to "Flat..." with the same results: Animations check box still not sticking. FYI, when I changed to Flat, it froze my computer. Don't know if that's significant or not. :))

Any ideas?

THANK YOU!

WOW! I went in terminal and did "sudo ccsm" and now my Animations checkbox is sticking! Woohoo! So on to the next task: getting them to work. Earlier you posted:

I can't find "Effect Settings" anywhere under Animations. God. I know this is something so easy, I just don't see it.

Thanks again for your continued assistance!!!

That's not quite right. ^^; The sudo command allows you to run a program as root, so even if the change sticks, it will apply to root's account, not yours. But it does remind me of a couple of other commands you can run to ensure that you have access to all the files that ccsm uses:
sudo chown -R yourusername:yourusernameagain /home/yourusername/.config /home/yourusername/.gconf /home/yourusername/.kde
sudo chmod -R +w /home/yourusername/.config /home/yourusername/.gconf /home/yourusername/.kde

Please try running ccsm again, without sudo, once that's done.

I can't find "Effect Settings" anywhere under Animations. God. I know this is something so easy, I just don't see it.
Are you sure you're looking in the right place? Please refer to this screenshot:
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j239/Deciare/opencompositing-org/animation-effect-settings.png
It's the red box in the middle that adjusts the colour of the fire.

Thanks again for your continued assistance!!!

the opened terminal and did this.

skynet@skynet-laptop:~$ sudo compiz
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2a02' found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

skynet@skynet-laptop:~$

searched around the net. downloaded openSUSE-10.3-GM-GNOME-Live-i386.iso

if i burn then install that, will that fix any of my problems? or i'm i just to much of a linux n00b?

A) Do not run compiz with sudo.

B) Try to run compiz like so: "SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz --replace ccp &" and let us know if it works. If that does work, run 'mkdir ~/.config/compiz; echo SKIP_CHECKS=yes >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager', and compiz should start straight away if you enable it from System --> Preferences --> Appearances --> Visual Effects.

C) Please start a new thread if you continue to have problem as we prefer to have one problem per user per thread.
