I have emerald theme manager installed, as well as an OSX Leopard theme I downloaded from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin/.
I imported it, I see it, I click it...and nothing changes. What am I doing wrong??

For some reason, themes don't apply for some people until they restart Emerald and/or Compiz. If you can't see your new theme even after restarting, then maybe the Emerald Theme Manager is failing to set the theme at all. You can force the theme to be set by performing these commands in a console:
cd ~/.emerald
rm -rf theme
cp -R themes/NAME_OF_THE_THEME_YOU_WANT/ theme
Then restarting Emerald.

Um...is there any way to return it to one of the default themes? >> Now that I try the themes out, I actually want to revert to one of the default ones...except the window borders remain modified.

I think the default themes are probably at /usr/share/emerald/themes/, so you should be able to copy one of those to ~/.emerald/theme the same way you did with the ones you imported.

I tried that, but that theme is the default emerald theme, not the default ubuntu theme. >> So I'm stuck with the Emerald theme now...any advice on getting the Ubuntu theme back? ><

Ohh, that! The default Ubuntu theme is actually gtk-window-decorator, I think.
Try gtk-window-decorator --replace & in a console?

Go to Autostarted Applications and see if emerald or compiz commands are in any of the autostart apps. Also, they use Avant Dock in their screenshot.

Oops. Does the option at ccsm->Window Decoration->Command say something about Emerald? Change it to "gtk-window-decorator --replace".
If that doesn't work, also open /usr/bin/compiz in a text editor and change the line USE_EMERALD="YES" to say USE_EMERALD="NO" It should be around line 69.
