I am getting a new(well... ebay) graphics card and would like to know if it is supported in Compiz-Fusion. A GeForce FX5200 256mb. I would be using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Dimension 4500 I have pretty low ram but will be getting more later. How much ram is required for small effects? Also, how would I set it up once I install the card.

Thanks!

Yes, it should work. I have Compiz Fusion and Ubuntu 7.04 running on a computer with almost exactly that card (except it only has 128 MB of memory). :)

It's an old computer, but it still has 512 MB of memory, so I'm not sure if your 256 MB would leave it feeling a bit starved... I don't know about exact memory requirements, but right now, on this significantly newer computer and fancier effects enabled, Compiz is only using 96 MB of system memory, so I don't think it'll be too bad.

Ubuntu 7.10 has Compiz Fusion enabled by default, so unless there's something unusual going on with your hardware, it should work without any fancy setup.

It doesn't work now, I just need to wait for the new card. The card I have right now is really bad. Like 32mb or something. Actually this makes me feel good :).

I just saw that, apparantly it's the same card I just got (maybe 128mb) and 256mb ram, it looks great.

That's "old"? I feel so outmoded. XD But yeah, even on the 1.0 GHz Pentium III I was talking about, Compiz still managed to look like it was animating. As opposed to frame skipping so much that you only see the first and last frame.

Maybe the reason Compiz isn't already loaded for you is because your current card failed the capability tests? I'm downloading Ubuntu 7.10 as I type this, so if Compiz isn't up by the time you install your new card, I might have an answer for you. ^_^

I know my current card isn't compatible. A main reason I got a new(ish) card is for compiz. The card just shipped (USPS) so I will hope to have it in a week or so.

Of coarse in a week I will also have Mac OSX 10.5 to try out on my sweet new 24" iMac :).
