I start Gset-Compiz and whatever changes I make do not take hold. There is only a quit button, and no apply button.
I can't even mark checkboxes.

gset-compiz?
such a program exists ? :D
to change settings in compiz, I suggest using the ccsm.
How to get the ccsm depends on what version of compiz/compiz fusion you're using (and how you installed it), and what distro you are using....
if you tell us those three pieces of information, then we'll be able to describe how to install the ccsm (if it isn't already installed).
... :D

I'm running PCLinuxOS and Compiz 0.3.4
I installed it via snaptic
I hope this helps.

I see, now "gset-compiz" makes sense...
(and I remember it now :D, can you post a screenshot (unrelated to your problem, but I've been around for quite a while, I can't remember what it looked like :D)
that is quite an old version of compiz you have there, I'm not sure what could be the problem, sorry....
..........(maybe one of the devs know.....)
though i'd suggest updating to a newer version of compiz and possibly installing compiz-fusion.... (quick search on the forum found this http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=2310).........
