all menus/submenus delayed opening 1+ seconds

I'm very new to compiz, as I am trying it out for the first time in the Ubuntu 7.10 RC. Everything seems to be working correctly except that all menus have a 1+ second delay before opening. I'm wondering if there is a configuration option that I can use to speed this up. I've looked through the ccsm without luck.

I have narrowed the problem down to compiz by turning off the desktop effects and no longer having the delay.

Anyone know what is causing this?
