Hello
I have two problems with compiz:
1) Very slow window resizing (in beryl too)
2) It freezes (all desktop) for a second or more when some other process intensively uses cpu (no such problem with beryl)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
RAM 512
nvidia GF 6600
NVIDIA Driver Version: 100.14.19
OpenSuSE 10.2
xorg-x11-server-7.2-129.2
compiz 0.5.4, 0.6.0 and from git
-----
sorry for my bad english

are you using XGL? (since u have opensuse 10.2)

No, only Xorg
(With Xgl - same problem)
I think, that the Xgl server is not necessary, since I use the NVIDIA driver.
I have updated Xorg server to
X.Org X Server 1.4.0
Release Date: 5 September 2007
- Nothing has changed

Thanks
I know about this option. It's not a solution of the problem.
What about the 2nd problem ???

Is the environment variable __GL_YIELD=NOTHING being set before Compiz starts? It tells the nvidia driver not to yield (slow down or pause its own processing) to other processes that want more system resources. It should already included in most startup scripts, but if you're starting yours manually and haven't been doing it, it can't hurt to try.

__GL_YIELD=NOTHING - changes nothing

There is no such problem with beryl.

I also have this issue. Menus take forever to popup and resizes are slow (except for GTK 1.x applications, of which I only use multi-gnome-terminal). I set the resize mode to stretch and it *looks* to resize smooth except when I stop resizing it takes a second to *update* the resized image.
I did not have any of these issues with Beryl (which I was using just over a week ago).
One odd thing.. I have a three monitor setup. Screen 0 on a dual head Nvidia card (in twin view) which I've always had. and a second nvidia card as screen 1 (independent screens). On screen 1 the menus are blazing fast, but not on the twinview screen 0, they take around a second to appear (and I DO mean a full second).
The video cards are both an NV34
TwinView - GeForce FX 5200 128M (AGP)
Single - GeForce FX 5500 128M (PCI)
Fedora 7 - x86_64
Compiz 0.6.2/ compiz-fusion 0.6.0
Kernel 2.6.22.9
NVIDIA 100.14.19

Hello,
I have the exact same problem....
- Running on Ubuntu 7.10
- AMD 64 3200+
- NVDIA 6150 (integrated 256MB)
- Driver 100.14.19
Could this problem be related to 100.14.19 driver ?

Eureka...
- Re-installed Emerald and at least one theme
- Installed Fusion-Icon
- In fusion-Icon selected 'inderect rendering'
And now it works well.... a bit slower then Beryl under Feisty but it is usable.
Ciao... PAB

Same problem here (not specific to compiz, also happens in kde4)
Can you run compiz at normal speed if you close all open windows or lower your resolution?
here is a video (having problems with google video, so you will get rapidshare link only at this moment):
http://rs155.rapidshare.com/files/103336931/kde3_compiz_slow.mpg
I have not tried __GL_YIELD=NOTHING trick yet, I'll update this post soon with the results
#edit:
google video link:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=766189265991560481&hl=en
more details of the problem: can't see what I type in terminal, alt+f2 dialog, konqueror (as demonstrated in the video); If I run "top" in Konsole, it won't we be updated during the slowdown, but I believe cpu usage is not 100%
#2nd edit:
assuming that I did the command right:
__GL_YIELD="NOTHING" compiz --replace
doesn't solve the slowdown problem
lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce Go 6200/6400] (rev a1)
#3rd edit:
link to kde4 slowness:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5168985544229124928&hl=en
this time triggered by changing texture filter in system settings, something like this has never happened in compiz
kde4 can be slowed down also the same way like compiz (by opening a few windows on desktop before enabling composite)
