View Full Version : Disable dimming or darkening of unresponsive windows

All
I routinely run apps that just sit and think for minutes or hours. When these apps run, their windows dim or darken. I do not want this to happen. If I am sharing my desktop with other folks this is very annoying.
I've seen other posts talk about grab features and gksu but I don't use that app. Also, I searched through the gconf-editor and found no references to "grab" anywhere.
How can I turn off this feature? I am using Compiz Fusion 0.5.2.
Thanks!

what's happening is that compiz thinks those windows are being unresponsive and so it darkens them...
but I'm unsure as to whether that behaviour can be changed....
I'd like an answer to this one as well :p

Right, there seems to be no option for that in CCSM.
I remember the option in Beryl was "dim unresponsive windows".

It seems that "general options -> ping delay" determines the delay when compiz greys out an unresponsive window. One can change that within a certain time range but, as far as I can find out, there is no way to switch it off.
Clearly that option should exist. (1) The effect assumes that, if a window is dead, the user no longer needs to see its contents. All information encoded in colours is lost. (2) Compiz does not agree with my idea of dead program. I have a python program that uses matplotlib (a python plotting library) to make figures of a simulation. Although the plot window is re-drawn every second, Compiz soon makes the window black and white and it stays that way. One may argue that this would not happen for properly threaded programs but people do use simple script applications and it would be nice if the window manager layer did not make those unusable.

Mod's Note: Due to being offtopic within this thread, this post has been split into the following new threads:
eZoom: Why does the view get dimmer when zooming in further? (Plugin Development forum)
More advanced lighting for dynamic window shadows; also, time-based shadows (Feature Requests forum)
