hello
ive been running compiz w/ compiz fusion on ubuntu (gnome) for a few months now. recently (the past week), i had been experiencing some issues with multiple desktops (only 1, it said 4). so i mess around with the settings and nothing. i reboot. i login, and the computer locks down completely, the keyboard does nothing, all programs are frozen, the panel is frozen. for some odd reason, the cursor still moves, but clicking does nothing. so i tinker for a while and decide to completely reinstall compiz from failsafe gnome. it works, i can login (and my multiple desktops are back). now, it seems some parts of gnome are inactive. its hard to explain...programs such as the gnome session manager and compizconfig are acting strangely. when they open the window is white. i cant see anything im doing, except if i minimize then restore. then the window shows whatever, but its frozen up. same with menus and the desktop. long menus such as system -> preferences do not scroll down (compiz --replace will fix this temporarily). when i click on a desktop icon, nothing happens (no highlight). i can still double click and run apps. ive tried just about everything. (note: programs such as firefox, thunderbird and rhythmbox work correctly. wtf...?)
thanks in advance!

So what did you do?
and nothing. i reboot. i login, and the computer locks down completely,
But you managed to login didn't you? So X seems to be running
the keyboard does nothing,
But this DOES look like some xorg.conf problem. Check /var/log/xorg.0.log for lines beginning with "EE" (which means Error)
all programs are frozen, the panel is frozen.
..While this does ring a bell. Did you also change things in gconf-editor?
when they open the window is white. i cant see anything im doing,
This really really sounds like an Xorg.conf setting. See: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=250865 for example, but there are hundreds of these
note: programs such as firefox, thunderbird and rhythmbox work correctly.
Maybe because they don't use settings with gconf-editor? It seems you have changed things in multiple places without restarting X in between. When you did restart X - reboot even -, things went miraculously well. X started, gdm started, your desktop came up, even compiz started. Please consider yourself lucky! On many occasions, even in the recent past, people were left with unbootable systems when tinkering with compiz. I was one of them. I will never change two independent things again without restarting X in between.
Good luck in getting your system back in its devine state!

hey helix,
Off hand there are several things you can try.
First, open ccsm and just above the close button is Preferences; in preferences make sure that flat file backend is being used and also hit the Reset to defaults button and then reload the window manager.
See if any of this helps at all.
let me know!

hi
can you change your thread title in advanced edit of the first post to something more descriptive (help forum organisation and forum search) to something like "parts of gnome seem to be "inactive""
thnx :D
as for your problem, does these things still happen if you have metacity running instead of compiz?
in your next post, can you please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and in tags, the result of #cat /var/log/xorg.0.log | grep EE
(btw, I'm not sure what the problem is, but if what Kubist suspects is true, then those two will help)
....... :)

Kubist & delfick: i did end up getting my menus, etc back, by enabling the "workarounds" setting in compizconfig. once i rebooted it worked.
coz: i had already tried that. thanks anyway!
one problem now: when i login, it takes compiz ~2min to load. i do start up fusion-icon when i login, but it never had any problems.

Hi,
I missed a capital X. It should read
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
By the way, you do not need to reboot for compiz changes to take effect. Restarting X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) also does the trick. And a lot faster.
