I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my computer. I've got an nVidia video card in a hp dv6000z laptop running Ubuntu Feisty.
Anyway, here's what happens. When I change screen modes via xrandr, sometimes the command executes fine and my screens are perfectly reconfigured. Other times, however, the screen will come back, and all I can see is the mouse pointer moving around. The screen itself will not refresh, and the computer will not accept any keyboard input. However, the soft poweroff works, so I can still power down gracefully.
Other times, X locks up entirely, and I have to hard poweroff the system.
Still other times, the screen comes back up as above, except it is black. I can still see the cursor. These times, sometimes there is keyboard input, some times there isn't. I can also (some times) see the cursor changing from a text cursor to the arrow to the hand or whatever is supposed to be there on the screen, but the screen is still black.
So, is this compiz killing me or is it something else?
