You should run from within a konsole and see what error messages display, also you should run the flat-file backend.
commands to run:
compiz --replace ccp&
emerald --replace&
ccsm&

Same issue here briefly, try changing the 'Backend' in the prefrences in Compiz Settings Manager, and/or running compiz with the command;
'compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp & '
One of a few annoying little issues with openSuSE 10.3 defaults, lol

Using the flat-file backend won't make any difference. I wonder why everyone suggests using the flat-file backend in case there is any problem with configuration. :confused:
The problem is that Suse by default configures compiz to run with gconf as storage plugin, not ccp. This page (http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion) (under "Auto Start") describes how to change that.

the same happened to me but changing gconf to ccp in /usr/bin/gnome-wm fixed it. :cool:

I also found out this really weird thing,
if you start compiz with the gconf plugin, open ccsm change the backend to gconf, enable inotify, and restart compiz again with the gconf plugin, all you settings will be used and saved :p
