When I have compiz fusion running (on Gentoo) and I go to log out of KDE via the log-out applet or K menu I get stuck on a black screen with nothing but a mouse pointer to move around.
No keyboard commands seem to work... ctrl-alt-backspace or any other combo yeilds no results. A cold reset is needed.
Anybody know what's happening?

Are you using nvidia's drivers? This seems to be a problem with their drivers.

Yes I am using nvidia drivers. That's a big bug! I hope they get it fixed soon!

That bug has been fixed long ago!
How, exactly, are you starting compiz? What are the incantations you're using to start it, etc... ?
Which graphics card? What driver version are you using? Which version of Xorg are you using?
[edit: The X freeze on logout problem will happen if there is a conflict in packages (different versions or something not removed from a previous version).
You can also try starting compiz using the --direct-rendering switch at the command line provided you are not using a "compiz.real" in /usr/bin or usr/local/bin (in which case modify the "compiz" script to include the --direct-rendering switch).
