hi,

Which of those packages should be installed? Can they be run on kde (only compiz-gnome there)? How do you run the compiz from there? Do you use gnome-window-decorator?

For now Mathias is doing compiz 0.3.2 packages, extra plugins package would follow later.

There is no separate kde packages you would have to use compiz and compiz-gnome packages and start as under:

compiz --replace gconf&
gtk-window-decorator --replace&

or if using xorg 7.x

compiz --use-cow --replace gconf&
gtk-window-decorator --replace&

Thanks for the hint.

I get the following error when trying to run that:
compiz --use-cow --replace gconf & gtk-window-decorator --replace &

...etc. The screen goes completely white and I can't see any mouse movements etc. Fortunately if a terminal is still open I can ctrl+c -> kwin --replace <enter>.

I'm running suse 10.2, Xorg 7.2 with the factory packages at that repository.

I'm running suse 10.2, Xorg 7.2 with the factory packages at that repository.

Those compiz packages are meant to be run with Xgl, so if you are running them without xgl, you would get white cube.

I would be putting up other packages with extra plugins and compiz without static mesa libGL that might solve your problem.

Packages work great here with plain Xorg. Nice. =)

Hi,

why does compiz from repo for SuSE Linux 10.1 requires metacity => 2.15.1?

AFAIK, openSUSE 10.1 comes with GNOME 2.12....

Or, if GNOME update needed, where to find it? (SuSE released "GNOME Supplementary" does not have 2.15.1...)

Thanx

Get metacity from Factory repository here

Ok, but why "for 10.1" then?

And a few questions:
1) I have ATI Radeon GFX card, that is unsupported on Xorg 7.2 (Suse 10.2, suse factory...)... what should I do? (comments aside suicide and switching GFX card please :) )

2) beryl vs compiz. Can somebody explain me the trick with this compiz package? As i see, it has a lot of similar (I was not comparing at source level!) plugins... what is the difference between them? beryl-core vs compiz (are both of them uses similar/equal plugin API?) I was reading some articles about beryl codebase forking compiz... ok, but now plugins are backported, or what?

Is backing store (prefs store), window decorator and "manager app" the only thing that makes compiz and beryl different? Please enlight me!

Thanx for explanations in advance, and sorry for being off-topic

Ok, but why "for 10.1" then?

Because 10.1 doesn't have metacity 2.15 and will not have ever.

I have no clue about ATI but I am sure they would be supported with proprietary drivers and Xgl.

2) beryl vs compiz. Can somebody explain me the trick with this compiz package? As i see, it has a lot of similar (I was not comparing at source level!) plugins... what is the difference between them?

They do the same thing, in the same way with very minor differences, use whichever you like and find stable for your use. Beryl is born out of same code as compiz.

Yeah, something like that.

I have updated compiz and compiz-extra packages synced with yesterday's (13 Dec) git, you can get those packages here:

http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/

Packages that you can install are:

Configuration tool from Gandalfn:

# 13-Dec-2006: gnome-compiz-preferences-extra-061213-5.1:
Simple configuration tool for Compiz.
# 13-Dec-2006: gnome-compiz-preferences-061213-3.1: Simple configuration tool for Compiz.

Up to date Compiz Packages

# 13-Dec-2006: compiz-061213-3.1: OpenGL window and compositing manager.
# 13-Dec-2006: compiz-gnome-061213-3.1: OpenGL window and compositing manager configuration utilities
# 13-Dec-2006: compiz-extra-0.3.5.2-3.1:
Compiz extra package with community contributed plugins.

For plugin development:

# 13-Dec-2006: compiz-devel-061213-3.1: OpenGL window and compositing manager plugin development files

As said in first post, these packages are not stable release packages, however they work great.

Enjoy

Hi,

It`s missing openSUSE 10.2 packages. With 10.1 packages I have the white cube problem.

Cheers.

The above compiz packages would work only with Xgl, they would give white screen and other problems if used with AIGLX or plain NVIDIA drivers.

I suggest using Beryl with AIGLX or NVIDIA.

Hi Cyberorg.

From reading the rest of this thread, it seems that the current compiz packages only work with Xgl. When will they work with AIGLX and/or Nvidia as well?

I don't mind using the Beryl packages, but for how long is that an option? I would also hope that compiz was more stable, but a white cube is of no use to me :)

/Martin.

Try compiz packages with the latest mesa from the build service xorg7.2 repository, they should work, if they do not work, you can file bug report on bugzilla.novell.com cc it to mhopf.
