Well just wanted to share with you that i transfered back to beryl 0.2.1
Reasons : Much better cube rendering, support for transparent cube & some other plugins that are not ported.
Unfortunately everything runs much smoother/better in beryl.
The difference is huge.
Good work compiz developers, but i think i'm gonna w8 for 0.6 or something, and give it another shot.

There _is_ support for transparent cube in Compiz. Of course, the other points being as vague as they are, I cannot comment on them.

There is, but it's not the same.
It's choppy and bad.
Much smoother feeling in beryl all around i must say.
When using beryl --use-copy, ffox opens in 2 sec, flash works great on transparent cube.
In compiz, when using transp. cube, ffox opens in like 5-7++ seconds, flash is unusable on transparent cube (even Youtube vidoes are cranky), opening appz generally is much slower.
Built in fps measurement & glxgears are faster when doing tests with both WM.

different people get different results, it is still beta software after all...
@()va|_ : I hope compiz and compiz-fusion work better for you in the future :D

Odd, since I have better performance with Compiz now.

Simply, you must do something wrong (especially if you have to use copy rendering and no clue about transparent cube support).

Nothing wrong with Beryl. I am in Debian Etch and Beryl works flawlessly. I have used compiz-fusion in Debian Lenny and it worked pretty good, but until it's finished and in 'stable' , I won't be using it. Everyone's all in such a hurry to jump on the bandwagon for software that isn't even out of development yet, but not me. The work that is being done is miraculous, but I can't afford to hose my system. Plus, fusion-icon is not even available for Debian Etch. so there's no way to configure it except through gconf settings. Long Live Beryl!!!

hm, smells like a problem with refresh rates...

for fusion-icon, any deb should do(it's written in python;)), if you cant find one download http://gitweb.compiz-fusion.org/?p=users/crdlb/fusion-icon;a=summary and 'make install' it.
for settings there is ccsm. :D

I use still Beryl too, beause IT WORKS!!
Even with the lastes nvidia-drivers beryl does NOT freeze the whole X-Server, while closing.
Secong: The Alpha-Blur works in Beryl, with the lastest compiz-version i testet it did not.
Third: Scrolling the cube-face works with beryl smoother.
I Scroll the cube-face with the mouse-wheel. This is also possible in compiz, but i have to wait, still the next faces is "snapped" in until i can scroll to the next face. In Beryl i do not have to.
Fourth: Beryls Cube-plgin can stick sticky windows to screen!

stick sticky windows to screen!
That and better overall performance keep me using Beryl. In Compiz I experience a notable lag when I close, max, or minimize a window (using emerald). Apps take a really long time to open. I have tried a variety of commands to launch compiz, I've made sure my xorg.conf is the way it should be according to the documentation. In beryl on the other hand, apps open reasonably fast.

I think i'm starting to see this lag you speak of with latest compiz, I think there is a memleak somewhere (especially when compiling anything, it brings system to a crawl...)
EDIT :: weird, it did that for compiz-0.6 as well... though doing "sudo chmod 666 /dev/nvidia*" fixed that and now it works...... (it is also how blur gets enabled for me, as I learnt from help from irc the other day....)
EDIT 2: finally made the permissions change permanent :D
change {KERNEL=="nvidia*", GROUP="video"} in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules to "{KERNEL=="nvidia*", GROUP="video", MODE="0666"}
(ubuntu feisty)
:D
because before my hard drive died and forced me to reinstall linux, i was using compiz-0.6 (from git, it isn't released yet) and it was fantastic, now i'm using latest and there's a definite difference....
personally i'm going back to compiz-0.6 :D

My friend also for some reason can run an old version of beryl, latest version of beryl doesn't work for him, nevermind compiz. Odd. His graphics card is pretty high-end too.

Actually, some-guy, on Debian Etch neither ccsm nor fusion-icon will work as they need dependencies that just aren't available in Etch.
If you look around in Shame's thread you'll see his problems setting up the Etch repo. It looks like he's doing it, but without ccsm and fusion-icon. Folks will need to configure using gconf.
Beryl from his repo is fantastic and full easy configuration using Beryl Manager. Plus, he includes all the fancy extra plugins.
Nothing wrong with using Beryl for those wanting to stick to Debian Etch. It's quite nice. So is Compiz Fusion, which also fixed old problems with Beryl. But a user will need to learn what to put into the gconf editor to get the proper results. I never tried to figure that out as whatever I've installed this stuff into always offered some sort of GUI configuration tool. Even the early OpenSUSE 10.2 Compiz had that Desktop Effects applet in Gnome Control Center to use. I used KDE, but had Gnome installed so used that panel back then for Compiz. I was a latecomer to Beryl. I just needed to use gconf editor to put in some stuff that fixed wobbly windows so they would work.
There are still guides around for Compiz and gconf, and most of that stuff would still apply to Compiz Fusion once Shame gets that repo going.

I actually haven't used CF long enough for memory leaks to be an issue. The key to the window decoration lag that I mentioned is the "Use Button Fade" option in the Emerald theme manager. If I disable this then closing, min/maximizing is responsive. If I enable this option CF waits until the fade animation is done before acting. Even if I have this set to the shortest possible fade time, CF still takes forever. I think the issue runs deeper as many things are slow. Docks are slow to expand and shrink as new icons appear and disappear. Eg. if I launch Firefox I can create a second window, close it and check my webmail in less time than it takes AWN to animate the appearance and disappearance of the second FF icon. Other animations seem to be fine ( but I really don't know). The best way I can put it is that most things are in very slow motion.

hmm, that sounds fairly irritating ...

Vid Card: GeForce 6200 TurboCache with 256 memory
CF version: 0.5.5 (from trevi's repo)
I've set my xorg.conf options according to the instructions in Jupiters post.
I launch CF with "compiz --replace --loose-binding --only-current-screen --indirect-rendering"
