Hey everyone

I was just wondering what docks you guys use, just kiba-dock??

I just installed it and wasn't all that impressed to be honest, but maybe i haven't set it up right or played with it enough.

But just seemed to bit quite buggy.

Just wondered who uses kiba-dock, any other dock available that people prefer, and did u use svn or what for kiba-dock??

I use avant window navigator (awn, http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/ ), which seems quite stable, and gives a nice simple dock. You should look at the forum or the blog, since the screenshots on the homepage are quite old.

Otherwise there's at least one other dock out there called kxdocker...

AWN for the win! =P If you install AWN, make sure you go get the Bazaar version. The stable is buggy and outdated.

AFAIK gnome-dock is more or less an abandoned project...

I had been using AWN for a while but I've lost interest in the project. It's a nice dock and worked(s) better than a few others that I've tried. But it seems that AWN is going towards a gnome only path and as a kde user I don't like that. The idea of a desktop environment neutral dock was quickly removed from the awn forum before it could be fully discussed by it's community. The only response that was made before the topic was modded into oblivion, was that it should become even dependent on gnome. I figure that there are other projects out there and I'll find a new one to support with a community open to dialogue.

Welcome to AWNs world... :-)

The challenge now is "heavy development", several branches and new applets.

A stable version 0.20 is highest priority for this project.

Reacocard and Trevino has packages, Reacocard have had trouble with his Falcon software but it seems to be fixed.

Cheers plun

Ill have a look arnd the forum

Funny you should say that because it does seem like kiba-dock has very little development going on with it since i last tried it.

Well i got a whole week before i go back to uni to play with my comp and fill it with eye candy :D

Hey guys

AWN does work and i really like it but is there any chance that you guys could have a look at some of the problems im having - i doubt anyone will help but awn forums seem to be a bit dead

http://www.planetblur.org/hosted/awnforum/index.php?shard=forum&action=g_reply&ID=905&page=1&isLive=true

You need awn-extras

http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/AWN-Extras?t=anon

There is a little mess now with too many new applets and ongoing work

The notification are needs more work... torube with Gnome and transparency.

Thanks for help plun but I've already installed the awn-extras

The problem is i can't get the clock or system tray applet to work, I've got Gnome menu and trash applets to work

System tray and clock just don;t appear except for a thin white line where it should be displayed.

I'm sorry im tlkin about awn in this forum its just the awn forum is impossible to use and no1 seems to of even taken an interest in my last post

But if any of you guys have any ideas plz ket me kno and ill giv it a go

also - anyone know how i should update my new awn??

OK...all applets are in heavy development...:)

Nicolaus clock is not ready, see readme inside your source
/home/username/awn-extras/awn-applets/awn-core-applets/src/clock

Nicolaus thread:
http://www.planetblur.org/hosted/awnforum/index.php?shard=forum&action=g_reply&ID=646&page=1&isLive=true

pyclock is another clock applet.

Notification-area seems to be broken, I am not using it, takes too much space.

I have a little piece left of my Gnome Upper panel inluding "systray". ;)

There is also work going on to let awn-manager handle trouble free applet installs.

Reacocard doesnt have time to build Ubuntu packages for Feisty, he has also
moved to Gutsy for his dev environment.

So this is a little messy for the moment, but AWN is great.....

May I suggest trying another dock. It's called cairo-dock. A new dev has taken over the work on this app and has made it much cooler. You can find it here https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=8724
The only problem with it at the moment is that it's mostly only in French. But you can try to play around with the different features, it's pretty easy to figure things out. I find it personnally nicer and less buggier than awn, even though I miss the 3d feature.

System tray and clock just don;t appear except for a thin white line where it should be displayed.

The system tray only works if you don't have one on your Gnome-panel.

If you have a problem with the language of Cairo-Dock, you can expose this on the Cairo-Dock forum.

The site is french, but forums and wiki have multi-language support.
http://localhost/elementspeak/bg_forumlist.php (choose "English" when you post topic)

cairo-dock is a bit too big for me... (and quite clunky feeling at times)

By too big do you mean the physical size or the resource footprint?

I find that Cairo-Dock works way better/smoother/faster than AWN on my system - a 4 year old (single core) Athlon @2.2 GHZ, 512 megs of SC DDR PC3200, and an Nvidia 6200 256 meg AGP 4x.
