As many of you already know, kwin uses a different method to handle virtual desktops. So if compiz is started after kwin, replacing it, the kicker applets, the taskbar and the desktop switcher get confused.
Kicker version 3.5.5 already includes preliminary support for windows managers like compiz and metacity when managing virtual desktops.
Using metacity switcher and taskbar work fine.. with compiz only if cube or plane is disabled (and viewports are used, number of desktops setting).
These are instructions to avoid some of these problems.
I used two systems, one debian etch i386 installation using an intel videocard and one debian etch amd64 installation using a nvidia card.
Compiz packages are from gandalfn's 0.3.6 source packages. I've installed wnck and gtk 2.10 from debian experimental.
- set the variable KDEWM in /etc/environment or in any user's bash startup script:
KDEWM=/usr/bin/compiz-tray-icon
you can also use a custom compiz script, or even beryl-manager... The only thing you should avoid is changing the window manager after kicker is started.
- disable, using gconf-editor (yes you need some gnome packages... I've installed both gnome and kde.. I prefer to use best programs of them in a mixed way), shortcut keys for main_menu and run_app as they will conflict with the kde shortcut key daemon
I use this taskbar http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=49484 as the normal one shows me always all the apps of all desktops.
Please give me some feedback....
With the intel card desktop switcher work well (window previews are not shown well, but changing desktops works on a cube with size 4), with the nvidia one,
