Ok, so I have have been using Linux for about a week now, and I see there are a bunch of cool perks to it. One feature that I'm sure most newbies like myself cant help to notice is the ability to highly customize your desktop, windows, and all that good stuff, by downloading stuff from Beryl. Now I heard some warnings about how "this stuff can be really tricky since its all alpha stage," and "Its stuff best suited for more advanced Linux users to tinker with." are there any "entry level" downloads that are stable and easy/safe to install and configure?

Thanks a lot I appreciate any feedback!
Vic

Ah this is all alpha stage software and all, but it's stable enough for day to day usage, I reckon. There might be occasional (not very often) breakages and all, but just post in the forum and someone will come along to help.

As a beginner in the world of GNU/Linux, you may be faced with unfamiliar concepts and whatnot. However, if you follow the instructions given for installing the software very closely, you probably will not run into problems. If you don't, well... what I can say is that the experience you get will be very educational, and it'll give you a jump start in learning about the distro you use.

welcome to linux :D

(firstly beryl is no more in existance (it finally merged back with compiz) ...now it's just the compiz core and compiz-fusion packages)

as for ease of installation, that depends on what distro you have and what graphic card you have...

assuming you have ubuntu and Nvidia (because they're just easy :D)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedDrivers/NVIDIAOfficial to install NVIDA drivers
and then use Amaranth's repos
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3153

(if you have another distro and/or graphics card, then just say and we'll give some more appropiate links :D)

as long as you'll approach everything with an open mind and keep trying when your attempts fail (worked for me :D, though it's got a bit easier since i first tried it (June last year seems so long ago :p), then you'll get it up and running :D
