I can't say what stjepan uses, but I'm a fan of xbindkeys.

I simply use compiz shortcuts+commands.
Alt+a = terminal
Alt+f = run (gmrun)
Alt+tab = file manager (thunar)
Alt+q = mute
Alt+w = volume down
Alt+e = volume up
Alt+r = volume 50%
Alt+f6 = restart compiz
Alt+f10 = quit
Alt+f11 = shutdown
Alt+f12 = reboot
My switcher is scale plugin. It's binded to bottom-left corner (scale) and bottom-right corner (scale all).
There are also other shortcuts I use:
Alt+v = toggle window fullscreen
Alt+c = window on top
Alt+Right click = initiate rotate
Right click on desktop = initiate rotate
Alt+s/d = rotate left/right
Shift+Alt+s/d = rotate with window left/right
Alt+scroll up/down = raise/lower window
Super+scroll up/down = zoom in/out
Shift+Alt+left click = annotate initiate
Shift+Alt+right click = annotate clear
Shift+Super+left click = screenshot
The panel is my modified version of pypanel. It shows the list of minimized windows, cpu temp, date and time. There's systray too! (I just use no apps that use it)
I don't use a display manager neither. It's simple autologin with startx and ~/.xinitrc. This way my system boots VERY fast.

Well, patching pypanel, scale plugin, tweaking commands and winrules, setting shortcuts for everything and configuring effects, writing .xinitrc, setting up autologin, window placement positions, systray apps, window opacities, twaking wallpaper and gtk theme, + anything I forgot to mention ==> ~3 hours
