Hey all! I'm planning on buying a widescreen LCD monitor and before I do I wanted to hear some suggestions and user experiences getting such a thing to work properly in Linux. For reference I have a nvidia 6800 card. Thanks in advance.

I've a SyncMaster 215TW (digital widescreen TFT with a native resolution of 1680x1050) attached to my GeForce 7900GT driven desktop-machine running Ubuntu 6.10. No problems at all with the display or the setup of it.
Best regards...

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW with a native resolution of 1440x900. I also have a GeForce 6800 and there are absolutely no problems with performance or setup. I'm running Ubuntu 6.10. :D

i recently bought an 24 inch iMac and triple boot it with MacOS, gentoo and windows XP and i can say that the monitor is fantastic with 1900x1200 native resolution on a geforce 7600, so go for an apple monitor

Am using a Dell E228WFP with a native res of 1680x1050 with my Nvidia 6800
and for $276 and 3 year warranty it rocks. It took a little fine tuning my Gentoo
to get freetype subpixel font rendering for lcd monitors working.

My Dell 24 incher works fine, but Ubuntu detects the maximum resolution wrong (1920x1200 is what it should be, but Ubuntu thinks its 1680x1680, which doesn't work) I think its actually a problem with the EDID info in the monitor. either way its very easily fixed in xorg.conf. The important part is that all the extra USB ports work well, as does the included card reader.
Other than small things like this, its mostly the video card you have to worry about in linux, monitors should have little or no problems.

I've used my 22" (1680x1050) as an extension of my X screen on my Intel-gfx laptop with no problems (granted, the picture was a bit off, but the autoconfig on my monitor isn't very good). You should be fine with a 19".
I don't think there really is much of a difference anymore between widescreen and fullscreen, especially when the plugins that would matter have aspect ratio settings.

best LCD screen would be that one they used in the centre of the opening ceremony for the 2008 olympic games :)
(well, the commentators said it was an LCD screen, whatever it was it was bloody huge :P)
